Dumpster rental in Albuquerque — size, street permit, typical price

This page is for Albuquerque homeowners renting a roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, stucco or roof job, or yard work. It covers size, the City of Albuquerque Dumpster or Storage Pod Permit (fee, barricades, lead time, extensions), and published prices with each source labeled.

Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched October 7, 2026: official permit pages and published prices fetched that day.

Driveway or street? Decide before you call

Albuquerque’s permit is inexpensive but needs barricades and lead time. Run these three checks before you book.

  1. Will the whole box sit on your driveway or lot? If yes, no city permit. Dumpsters.com’s Albuquerque FAQ says you don’t need a permit if the bin is on your property; its delivery notes call for about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of overhead clearance.
  2. Street or other public area? The Construction Services Division’s right-of-way page offers a downloadable Dumpster or Storage Pod Permit Application. The form requires lighted barricades at the front and rear of the dumpster and asks for your barricade company.
  3. Lead time. The dumpster form says to submit at least 5 business days before the start date; the right-of-way applications page says all applications must be submitted at least 14 calendar days ahead. Plan on the longer window.

Have these five answers ready when you call

  • Job type and debris: remodel, roof, cleanout, yard, or heavy material like concrete, dirt, or brick.
  • Size you think you need (10 or 20 yard covers most homes; see the Size chooser below).
  • Placement: driveway, yard, or street, and roughly how much straight approach the truck gets.
  • Drop-off date and how many days you need it.
  • Questions for the quote: included tons, overage per ton, extra-day charge, and anything the hauler won’t take.

Comparing more than one quote? Use the 7-day quote checklist so the numbers line up.

Size chooser

Uses Dumpsters.com Albuquerque size notes (verified 10/3/2026). That page lists 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40-yard boxes; a 15-yard is about 4–5 pickup-truck loads. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means. Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway.

10 yard

Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk removal, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.

Dumpsters.com Albuquerque: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).

Dumpsters.com Albuquerque

20 yard

Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway.

Dumpsters.com Albuquerque: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 4.5′; about 6 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpsters.com Albuquerque

30 yard

Best for: garage demolition, home additions, estate cleanouts, large-scale lawn work. Needs a long driveway or a permitted curb space.

Dumpsters.com Albuquerque: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 6′; about 9 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpsters.com Albuquerque

40 yard

Best for: home flipping, warehouse cleanouts, multi-unit renovations, storefront remodels. Typical box is about 8 ft tall.

Dumpsters.com Albuquerque: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads. Prefer loose bulky debris over dense concrete or brick that blows the weight cap early.

Street permit

Required? YES — City of Albuquerque DMD Dumpster or Storage Pod Permit for a dumpster in the right-of-way ($21.00 per month).

The City of Albuquerque Department of Municipal Development Right-of-Way Activities Permit Applications page says the Construction Coordination Section organizes most activities in the public right-of-way, including excavation/barricade permits, and offers a downloadable Dumpster or Storage Pod Permit Application. It says all applications must be submitted at least fourteen calendar days before the anticipated start date, and any activity altering or interfering with right-of-way traffic must be properly barricaded by certified individuals.

The Dumpster/Storage Pod Application Form is emailed to dmdccs@cabq.gov. It asks for the dumpster’s address, your barricade company, and start and end dates, and notes: “Lighted barricades must be placed at the front and rear of a dumpster/storage pod. Please submit your application at least 5 business days before your anticipated start date.” Permits marked “Payment Due” are not valid until paid. Extensions can be requested by email with the permit number and a new date not exceeding 30 days.

The city’s Barricade Fees page lists “Dumpster Permit — $21.00 per/month.”

The city pages do not publish a driveway exception sentence; keep the box on private property to stay outside the permit.

How to apply

  • Download the Dumpster/Storage Pod Application Form and email it to dmdccs@cabq.gov.
  • List a barricade company — lighted barricades are required at the front and rear of the box (the city links a barricade company list).
  • Submit early: the form says at least 5 business days; the applications page says 14 calendar days for all applications.
  • Pay before placement — “Payment Due” permits are not valid. Questions: Construction Services, (505) 924-3400.

Fees (City of Albuquerque Barricade Fees — fetched October 7, 2026)

  • Dumpster Permit: $21.00 per month
  • Related lines if needed: Residential Street Closure $21.00 per day; Residential Sidewalk Closure $21.00 per month; Alley Closure $21.00 per week

Barricade rental is a separate cost from the barricade company, not a city fee.

Information last verified 10/3/2026 (fetched 10/7/2026). All sizes blended. The dollar range is not labeled 7-day on that city block. By-size dollars are not printed.

$355–$828. Average $508.

Blended Albuquerque index from one published source. Barricade rental is an extra cost to plan for on street placements. Weight limits and overages are usually extra; we did not invent those numbers.

The call button on this page is a tracked partner line for a rental quote (see the disclosure next to the button), not a Albuquerque permit-desk number. Permit fees in the section above are municipal charges, not a rental price.

What not to put in

Ask before you load. Keep household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries), tires, appliances that hold refrigerant, and anything flammable or toxic out of a mixed roll-off unless the hauler confirms it can take it. Dumpsters.com Albuquerque’s page says flammable, toxic, and hazardous materials are not allowed in its dumpsters. Local household-hazardous-waste drop-off rules were not re-checked for this Albuquerque page — ask the hauler or the city before you load gray-area items.

Gotchas

  • Lighted barricades at the front and rear of the box are required — budget for a barricade company.
  • Two published lead times (5 business days on the form, 14 calendar days on the applications page) — use the longer one.
  • “Payment Due” permits are not valid until paid.
  • Extensions go by email, up to 30 days at a time.
  • Activities that interfere with right-of-way traffic must be barricaded by certified individuals.
  • Dumpsters.com Albuquerque delivery envelope: about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance.
  • HOA, co-op, and landlord rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
