Dumpster rental in Pittsburgh — size, street permit, typical price

This page is for City of Pittsburgh homeowners renting a roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers size, the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) Demolition Dumpster staging permit (fees, 42-day limit, signs, inspections), and published prices with each source labeled.

Driveway or street? Decide before you call

Pittsburgh’s permit is well documented but needs weeks of lead time. Run these three checks before you book.

  1. Will the whole box sit on your driveway or lot? If yes, you avoid the DOMI permit. Dumpsters.com’s Pittsburgh delivery notes call for about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of overhead clearance — steep or short driveways may not work.
  2. Need the street? DOMI says a person or company must apply for a Construction Staging Permit (Demolition Dumpster work type) to place a dumpster in the right-of-way for temporary construction purposes, for up to 42 days. Whenever possible the dumpster should be in a parking lane.
  3. Start early. DOMI recommends applying 3 to 4 weeks before work. After a complete application, allow one week for review; post any No Parking sign at least 48 hours before the permit starts.

Have these five answers ready when you call

  • Job type and debris: remodel, roof, cleanout, yard, or heavy material like concrete, dirt, or brick.
  • Size you think you need (10 or 20 yard covers most homes; see the Size chooser below).
  • Placement: driveway, yard, or street, and roughly how much straight approach the truck gets.
  • Drop-off date and how many days you need it.
  • Questions for the quote: included tons, overage per ton, extra-day charge, and anything the hauler won’t take.

Comparing more than one quote? Use the 7-day quote checklist so the numbers line up.

Size chooser

Uses Dumpsters.com Pittsburgh size notes (verified 10/3/2026). That page lists 10, 15, 20, and 30-yard boxes — no 40-yard — so the cards below stop at 30. A 15-yard is about 4–5 pickup-truck loads. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means. Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway.

10 yard

Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk removal, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.

Dumpsters.com Pittsburgh: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).

Dumpsters.com Pittsburgh

20 yard

Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway.

Dumpsters.com Pittsburgh: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 4.5′; about 6 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpsters.com Pittsburgh

30 yard

Best for: garage demolition, home additions, estate cleanouts, large-scale lawn work. Needs a long driveway or a permitted curb space.

Dumpsters.com Pittsburgh: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 6′; about 9 pickup-truck loads.

Street permit

Required? YES — DOMI Construction Staging Permit (Demolition Dumpster) for a dumpster in the right-of-way, up to 42 days.

The City of Pittsburgh Right-of-Way Management page lists DOMI construction permits including “Construction Staging Permits (i.e. scaffolding, dumpsters, barricades, etc.),” which let a person or company stage materials or machinery in a parking lane or close part of a sidewalk or street.

DOMI’s Construction Staging Permit (Demolition Dumpster) Information Sheet (dated April 2025): a person or company must apply for this permit to place a dumpster in the right-of-way for temporary construction purposes for up to 42 days; dumpsters should be in a parking lane whenever possible; any issued No Parking sign must be posted at least 48 hours before the permit period; and the current approved permit must be attached to the dumpster, facing the sidewalk.

Review: DOMI flags incomplete applications within three business days, then allows one week to approve or deny a complete one. The permittee must request two DOMI inspections — a compliance inspection after the dumpster is placed and a post-occupancy inspection at the end. Durations over 42 days are not approved; one extension of up to 42 more days may be. Dumpsters left after expiry are subject to citation.

DOMI also lists a separate Annual Dumpster permit under business operations; it is not the homeowner remodel path. The city pages do not publish a driveway exception sentence.

How to apply

  • Apply through OneStopPGH (Construction Staging — Demolition Dumpster). Information needed: applicant contact, dumpster company name, purpose and location, the proposed traffic obstruction, address or block and cross streets, and start/end dates.
  • DOMI recommends applying 3 to 4 weeks before the start of work (Applicant Guidance).
  • If metered spaces are affected, contact the Pittsburgh Parking Authority (412-560-2555) and pay meter fees.
  • Questions: DOMI permit line 412-255-2370 or domipermits@pittsburghpa.gov (counter and remote service Mon–Fri 9am–3pm).

Fees (DOMI Demolition Dumpster information sheet — fetched October 7, 2026)

  • Base fee: $135 due at application, $60 due at issuance
  • Extension fee: $40
  • Major Obstruction Fee: $280 for permits longer than 18 days
  • Primary Road / Business District Fee: $30 per two weeks (primary roadway or business district)
  • Parking meter fees through the Pittsburgh Parking Authority when meters are affected

DOMI also publishes a 2026 ROW Fee Schedule on its Applicant Guidance page; confirm the OneStopPGH total before you pay.

Information last verified 10/3/2026 (fetched 10/7/2026). All sizes blended. The dollar range is not labeled 7-day on that city block. By-size dollars are not printed.

$396–$983. Average $656.

Blended Pittsburgh index from one published source. DOMI fees above are municipal charges, separate from the rental. Weight limits and overages are usually extra.

The call button on this page is a tracked partner line for a rental quote (see the disclosure next to the button), not a Pittsburgh permit-desk number. Permit fees in the section above are municipal charges, not a rental price.

What not to put in

Ask before you load. Keep household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries), tires, appliances that hold refrigerant, and anything flammable or toxic out of a mixed roll-off unless the hauler confirms it can take it. Dumpsters.com Pittsburgh’s page says flammable, toxic, and hazardous materials are not allowed in its dumpsters. Local household-hazardous-waste drop-off rules were not re-checked for this Pittsburgh page — ask the hauler or the city before you load gray-area items.

Gotchas

  • Apply 3–4 weeks ahead (DOMI recommendation); review alone is about a week after a complete application.
  • 42-day maximum, with one extension of up to 42 more days.
  • Past 18 days, a $280 Major Obstruction Fee applies.
  • Two required DOMI inspections: after placement and at the end.
  • The approved permit must be attached to the dumpster, facing the sidewalk.
  • Dumpsters.com Pittsburgh lists sizes only up to 30 yards.
  • HOA, co-op, and landlord rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
