Dumpster rental in Detroit — size, street permit, typical price
This page is for Detroit homeowners renting a roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers size, when the City Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works requires a Right-of-Way permit (including the grass berm between curb and sidewalk), the bond and downtown review rules, and published prices with each source labeled.
Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched October 7, 2026: official permit pages and published prices fetched that day.
Driveway or street? Decide before you call
Detroit counts the berm (the grass strip between curb and sidewalk) as right-of-way. Run these three checks before you book.
Will the whole box sit on your driveway or lot? If yes, you avoid the city permit. Dumpsters.com’s Detroit FAQ says permits cost money, so a driveway is a free option that doesn’t require one; its delivery notes call for about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of overhead clearance.
Will any part touch the street, alley, sidewalk, or berm? Detroit DPW says a permit from the City Engineering Division is required before activity in a street, alley, sidewalk, or berm/green area, and lists dumpsters under “Occupying” the right-of-way.
Downtown or Midtown? Work in the Central Business District or Midtown also goes to the Technical Review Committee, which meets weekly on Tuesdays — allow extra time.

Size chooser
Uses Dumpsters.com Detroit size notes (verified 10/3/2026). That page lists 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40-yard boxes; a 15-yard is about 4–5 pickup-truck loads. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means. Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway.
10 yard
Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk removal, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.
Dumpsters.com Detroit: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).
Best for: home flipping, warehouse cleanouts, multi-unit renovations, storefront remodels. Typical box is about 8 ft tall.
Dumpsters.com Detroit: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads. Prefer loose bulky debris over dense concrete or brick that blows the weight cap early.
Required?YES — Detroit DPW City Engineering Right-of-Way permit (permit type “Dumpster”) for the street, alley, sidewalk, or berm.
The City of Detroit Right of Way Permits and Standards page says that under Detroit Code Section 43, Division 2, “it is necessary to obtain a permit from the City Engineering Division, DPW prior to any construction activities within a street, alley, sidewalk or berm/green area.” It lists “Occupying — Temporary sidewalks/lane/street closure (e.g., crane/construction equipment on street/sidewalk, filming, special events, dumpsters, etc.)”.
Under “Occupying the Right-of-Way,” the permit types include Dumpster (alongside Barricade, Curb Cut, and others).
The same page defines right-of-way as streets, alleys, public sidewalks, curbs, and “the berm/green area, which is the area between the curb and sidewalk.” It notes all contractors must be bonded with a $2,500 surety bond with the City before any work in the right-of-way.
Central Business District and Midtown work must also be reviewed by the Technical Review Committee (weekly, Tuesday mornings); permits there are not issued until TRC approves. The city page does not publish a driveway exception sentence.
How to apply
Apply through the City of Detroit Right of Way Management online permit portal linked from the DPW page (site plans are uploaded once the application is assigned to a permit coordinator).
Have the $2,500 surety bond in place before work in the right-of-way (DPW page; the city’s permit form describes the bond procedure).

In the CBD or Midtown, build in time for the weekly Technical Review Committee.
Fees
A Detroit dumpster right-of-way permit dollar amount is not printed on the DPW page fetched October 7, 2026, and the older fee-schedule PDF we found did not return readable text. Ask City Engineering or your hauler. We did not invent a number.

The call button on this page is a tracked partner line for a rental quote (see the disclosure next to the button), not a Detroit permit-desk number. Permit fees in the section above are municipal charges, not a rental price.
What not to put in
Ask before you load. Keep household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries), tires, appliances that hold refrigerant, and anything flammable or toxic out of a mixed roll-off unless the hauler confirms it can take it. Dumpsters.com Detroit’s page says flammable, toxic, and hazardous materials are not allowed in its dumpsters. Local household-hazardous-waste drop-off rules were not re-checked for this Detroit page — ask the hauler or the city before you load gray-area items.
Gotchas
The berm (grass strip between curb and sidewalk) is right-of-way in Detroit — a box parked there still needs the permit.
Dumpster is a named Occupying the Right-of-Way permit type.
Contractors working in the right-of-way need a $2,500 surety bond with the City.
CBD and Midtown placements wait on the weekly Technical Review Committee.

HOA, co-op, and landlord rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
Yes if the dumpster occupies a Detroit street, alley, sidewalk, or berm. DPW says a City Engineering Division permit is required before activity in the right-of-way, and lists Dumpster as an Occupying the Right-of-Way permit type. A box on your own driveway is outside it.
Is the grass strip in front of my Detroit house private?
Not for permit purposes. Detroit DPW defines the right-of-way to include the berm/green area between the curb and sidewalk, so a dumpster placed there needs the Right-of-Way permit.
Is a bond required for a Detroit dumpster permit?
Detroit DPW says all contractors must be bonded with a $2,500 surety bond with the City before any work in the right-of-way. Ask your Detroit hauler whether it carries that bond and pulls the permit.
