Dumpster rental in Milwaukee — size, street permit, typical price
This page is for City of Milwaukee homeowners renting a roll-off for a bungalow or duplex remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers size, the city’s published rules for dumpsters in the public way (winter ban, setbacks, barricades, parking-zone limits), and published prices with each source labeled.
Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched October 7, 2026: official permit pages and published prices fetched that day.
Driveway or street? Decide before you call
Milwaukee publishes a detailed one-page rule sheet for street dumpsters — and a winter ban. Run these three checks before you book.
Will the whole box sit on your driveway? If yes, no city permit. Dumpsters.com’s Milwaukee FAQ says driveway placement needs no permit; its delivery notes call for about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of overhead clearance.
Street, sidewalk, or alley? The city’s “Dumpsters in the Public Way” sheet: “A permit is required before you place dumpsters in the public right-of-way (street, sidewalk, or alley).” It is obtained at the Development Center, 809 N. Broadway, 1st floor.
Is it winter? Dumpsters may not be placed on streets or alleys open to traffic from December 1 to March 1. Winter jobs need a driveway or other private spot.

Size chooser
Uses Dumpsters.com Milwaukee size notes (verified 10/3/2026). That page lists 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 40-yard boxes; a 12-yard is about 3–4 pickup-truck loads. Dumpsters.com lists a typical box width of 7.5 ft, and the city caps street dumpsters at 8 ft out from the face of the curb. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means. Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway.
10 yard
Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk removal, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.
Dumpsters.com Milwaukee: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).
Best for: home flipping, warehouse cleanouts, multi-unit renovations, storefront remodels. Typical box is about 8 ft tall.
Dumpsters.com Milwaukee: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads. Prefer loose bulky debris over dense concrete or brick that blows the weight cap early.
Required?YES — City of Milwaukee permit before a dumpster goes in the street, sidewalk, or alley (none on streets/alleys open to traffic Dec 1–Mar 1).
The City of Milwaukee Permit & Development Center sheet Dumpsters in the Public Way (DNS, dated 09/18/2020) says a permit is required before you place dumpsters in the public right-of-way (street, sidewalk, or alley). The permit fee “is based on the length of time the dumpster occupies the public way and the amount of space occupied.” Questions go to the DPW parking operations office, (414) 286-3276 or (414) 286-3231.
Placement rules on that sheet: no dumpsters on streets or alleys open to traffic from December 1 to March 1; never in traffic lanes; not in posted No Parking, Tow-away, or Bus Loading zones (full- or part-time); not in illegal spaces such as crosswalks, hydrants, or driveway approaches; at least 10 feet from street trees, police call boxes, utility or light poles, pad-mounted transformers, and fire escapes or exits; no more than 8 feet into the roadway from the face of the curb.
Also on the sheet: set back 60 feet from any intersecting cross-street curb lane and 20 feet from any intersecting alley; place it next to the work area (get permission if it fronts an uninvolved property); mark the traffic-approach side with a Type I barricade with a flashing yellow light and reflective sheeting — you supply it, DPW does not; alleys must keep 11 feet open for traffic; sidewalk placements must keep 5 feet for pedestrians with barricades and signs at both ends.
Meter spaces must have the meters hooded or removed for a fee (Parking Operations, (414) 286-3271). The sheet does not publish a driveway rule; Dumpsters.com says driveway placement needs no permit.
How to apply
Get the permit at the Permit & Development Center, 809 N. Broadway, 1st floor (milwaukee.gov/permits; (414) 286-8211).
Line up a Type I barricade with flashing light and reflective sheeting from the rental company or a traffic sign firm.
If the spot is metered, arrange hooding or removal with Parking Operations at (414) 286-3271.
Dumpsters.com Milwaukee says it needs a copy of the permit before delivery and that the application process can take up to five days (hauler guidance, not a city rule).
Fees
The city sheet says the fee is based on time and space occupied but does not print a dollar amount. A Milwaukee dollar figure was not confirmed on an official page on October 7, 2026, so none is shown here. Ask the Development Center or your hauler.

The call button on this page is a tracked partner line for a rental quote (see the disclosure next to the button), not a Milwaukee permit-desk number. Permit fees in the section above are municipal charges, not a rental price.
What not to put in
Ask before you load. Keep household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries), tires, appliances that hold refrigerant, and anything flammable or toxic out of a mixed roll-off unless the hauler confirms it can take it. Dumpsters.com Milwaukee’s page says flammable, toxic, and hazardous materials are not allowed in its dumpsters. Local household-hazardous-waste drop-off rules were not re-checked for this Milwaukee page — ask the hauler or the city before you load gray-area items.
Gotchas
No dumpsters on streets or alleys open to traffic from December 1 to March 1.
No more than 8 ft into the roadway from the curb face; never in a traffic lane.
Setbacks: 60 ft from a cross-street curb lane, 20 ft from an alley, 10 ft from trees, poles, transformers, call boxes, and fire exits.
You supply the Type I barricade with flashing light; the city does not.
Posted No Parking, Tow-away, and bus zones are off-limits, even part-time ones.
The official sheet is dated 2020 and prints no fee — confirm current rules at the Development Center.
HOA, co-op, and landlord rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
Yes if the dumpster goes in a Milwaukee street, sidewalk, or alley. The city says a permit is required before you place dumpsters in the public right-of-way, obtained at the Development Center, 809 N. Broadway. A box on your own driveway is outside it.
Can I put a dumpster on a Milwaukee street in winter?
Not on streets or alleys open to traffic from December 1 to March 1. Milwaukee’s Dumpsters in the Public Way sheet bans those placements in that window, so winter jobs need a driveway or other private spot.
How far into the street can a Milwaukee dumpster go?
No more than 8 feet into the roadway from the face of the curb, and never in a traffic lane (City of Milwaukee). It must also be set back 60 feet from a cross-street curb lane and 20 feet from an alley.
How much is a Milwaukee dumpster permit?
Milwaukee says the fee is based on how long the dumpster occupies the public way and how much space it takes, but the official sheet does not print a dollar amount. We did not confirm a Milwaukee figure on an official page, so ask the Development Center or your hauler.
