Driveway or street? Decide before you call

Kansas City has a named Dumpster permit and a simple per-day fee option. Run these three checks before you book.

  1. Will the whole box sit on your driveway? If yes, no city permit. Dumpsters.com’s Kansas City FAQ says you only need a permit if the dumpster will be in a public right of way; its delivery notes call for about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of overhead clearance.
  2. Street, curb lane, or sidewalk? Kansas City Public Works handles permits for activities in the public right-of-way and lists a “Dumpster permit” among its Compass KC applications.
  3. Non-major street, single box? City ordinance lets a single construction or demolition dumpster (50 ft or shorter) in the sidewalk, non-roadway area, or curb lane of a non-major street pay a flat $12.31 per day with no application fee.

Have these five answers ready when you call

  • Job type and debris: remodel, roof, cleanout, yard, or heavy material like concrete, dirt, or brick.
  • Size you think you need (10 or 20 yard covers most homes; see the Size chooser below).
  • Placement: driveway, yard, or street, and roughly how much straight approach the truck gets.
  • Drop-off date and how many days you need it.
  • Questions for the quote: included tons, overage per ton, extra-day charge, and anything the hauler won’t take.

Comparing more than one quote? Use the 7-day quote checklist so the numbers line up.

Size chooser

Uses Dumpsters.com Kansas City size notes (verified 10/3/2026). That page lists 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 40-yard boxes; a 12-yard is about 3–4 pickup-truck loads and a 15-yard about 4–5. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means. Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway.

10 yard

Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk removal, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.

Dumpsters.com Kansas City: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).

Dumpsters.com Kansas City

20 yard

Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway.

Dumpsters.com Kansas City: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 4.5′; about 6 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpsters.com Kansas City

30 yard

Dumpsters.com Kansas City

Best for: home flipping, warehouse cleanouts, multi-unit renovations, storefront remodels. Typical box is about 8 ft tall.

Dumpsters.com Kansas City: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads. Prefer loose bulky debris over dense concrete or brick that blows the weight cap early.

Street permit

Required? YES — Kansas City Public Works Dumpster permit (Compass KC) for a dumpster in the public right-of-way.

Kansas City’s Public Works Permit Applications page says the Permits Division “addresses permits for activities within the public right-of-way or activities that could impact public use of the streets and right-of-way,” that Public Works is only accepting permits through Compass KC, and lists “Dumpster permit” among the online applications.

City Ordinance 241053 (effective January 1, 2025) sets the trailer-or-dumpster fee: “an application fee of $60.53 and a traffic control permit fee resulting from that obstruction within the right-of-way.” For a single trailer or dumpster not over 50 feet long, used for construction or demolition work, placed in the sidewalk, non-roadway area, or curb lane of a street not identified as a major street, “an applicant may elect to pay a flat traffic control fee of $12.31 per day or portion thereof … in which case there shall be no application fee charged.”

The same ordinance lets the city adjust these fees annually to track the consumer price index, so confirm the current amount in Compass KC.

The city page does not publish a driveway exception sentence; keep the box on private property to stay outside the right-of-way permit.

How to apply

  • Register free in Compass KC and submit the Public Works Dumpster permit.
  • Pick the fee path: flat $12.31/day (single construction/demolition dumpster, curb lane or sidewalk of a non-major street) or $60.53 application + traffic control fee.
  • Compass KC login help: CompassKC@kcmo.org or (816) 513-3720.
  • Ask your hauler whether it applies or expects you to.

Fees (Kansas City Ordinance 241053 text, effective January 1, 2025)

  • Flat option: $12.31 per day or portion of a day — single construction/demolition dumpster ≤50 ft in the sidewalk, non-roadway area, or curb lane of a non-major street; no application fee
  • Otherwise: $60.53 application fee plus the applicable traffic control permit fee

Fees may be CPI-adjusted annually under the ordinance. Confirm in Compass KC before paying.

What not to put in

Ask before you load. Keep household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries), tires, appliances that hold refrigerant, and anything flammable or toxic out of a mixed roll-off unless the hauler confirms it can take it. Dumpsters.com Kansas City’s page says flammable, toxic, and hazardous materials are not allowed in its dumpsters. Local household-hazardous-waste drop-off rules were not re-checked for this Kansas City page — ask the hauler or the city before you load gray-area items.

Gotchas

  • Public Works takes permits only through Compass KC.
  • The $12.31/day flat fee only covers a single construction/demolition dumpster on a non-major street; major streets use the application + traffic control path.
  • Fees can be CPI-adjusted each year — the ordinance numbers are a 2025 baseline.
  • This page covers Kansas City, Missouri; Kansas City, Kansas is a separate city with its own rules.
  • Dumpsters.com Kansas City delivery envelope: about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance.
  • HOA, co-op, and landlord rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
