Dumpster rental in Los Angeles — size, street permit, typical price

This page is for City of Los Angeles homeowners renting a roll-off for a remodel, re-roof, cleanout, or yard job. It covers size, the StreetsLA permit path when the job spills onto public property, the LA Sanitation (LASAN) rule that mixed construction and demolition debris must be hauled by a permitted hauler, and published prices with each source labeled.

Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched October 7, 2026: official permit pages and published prices fetched that day.

Driveway or street? Decide before you call

In Los Angeles the cleanest path is a driveway drop. Run these three checks before you book.

  1. Will the whole box sit on your driveway or lot? If yes, you avoid the public-property permit described below. Dumpsters.com’s LA delivery notes call for about 60 ft of straight approach and 23–25 ft of overhead clearance.
  2. Does the job need the sidewalk or street? StreetsLA says Building Materials Permits “are commonly used when construction projects on private property need to make use of public property (usually a sidewalk).” The page frames construction materials and equipment and does not name dumpsters — confirm with StreetsLA before you place a box there.
  3. Is it construction or demolition debris? LASAN requires all mixed C&D debris generated in the city to be transported by a permitted private waste hauler to a City-certified processing facility. Ask the hauler for its LASAN permit before you book.

Have these five answers ready when you call

  • Job type and debris: remodel, roof, cleanout, yard, or heavy material like concrete, dirt, or brick.
  • Size you think you need (10 or 20 yard covers most homes; see the Size chooser below).
  • Placement: driveway, yard, or street, and roughly how much straight approach the truck gets.
  • Drop-off date and how many days you need it.
  • Questions for the quote: included tons, overage per ton, extra-day charge, and anything the hauler won’t take.

Comparing more than one quote? Use the 7-day quote checklist so the numbers line up.

Size chooser

Uses Dumpsters.com Los Angeles size notes (verified 10/3/2026). That page lists 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 40-yard boxes; a 15-yard is about 4–5 pickup-truck loads and a 25-yard about 7–8. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means. Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway.

10 yard

Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk removal, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.

Dumpsters.com Los Angeles: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).

Dumpsters.com Los Angeles

20 yard

Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway.

Dumpsters.com Los Angeles: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 4.5′; about 6 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpsters.com Los Angeles

30 yard

Best for: garage demolition, home additions, estate cleanouts, large-scale lawn work. Needs a long driveway or a permitted curb space.

Dumpsters.com Los Angeles: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 6′; about 9 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpsters.com Los Angeles

40 yard

Best for: home flipping, warehouse cleanouts, multi-unit renovations, storefront remodels. Typical box is about 8 ft tall.

Dumpsters.com Los Angeles: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads. Prefer loose bulky debris over dense concrete or brick that blows the weight cap early.

Street permit

Required? PUBLIC PROPERTY = CITY PERMIT — StreetsLA Building Materials Permit for private construction that uses the sidewalk or street. Driveway first.

The StreetsLA (Bureau of Street Services) Building Materials Permits page says the permit lets StreetsLA “safeguard and protect the public right-of-way and/or public infrastructure.” Its notes say these permits “are commonly used when construction projects on private property need to make use of public property (usually a sidewalk) in some way.” The page does not use the word “dumpster.”

Process on that page: the constituent or their contractor applies directly to StreetsLA’s Investigation & Enforcement Division (IED); StreetsLA pre-inspects the location; corrections are common; other departments may get involved — the Bureau of Engineering (if there is an A- or B-permit) or LADOT (if a traffic control plan is required). Once approved, the permit is issued for a maximum of 60 days.

If you already hold an A- or B-Permit from the Bureau of Engineering, StreetsLA says it will not charge for a Building Materials Permit.

Dumpsters.com’s Los Angeles FAQ says you will likely need a permit for a public right of way such as a street and points to Bureau of Engineering Revocable (R) Permits. We did not verify a dumpster-specific R-permit rule on a city page, so treat that as the hauler’s pointer, not a city rule.

City pages fetched for this write-up do not publish a “driveway = no permit” sentence. Keeping the box fully on private property is the practical way to stay outside public-property permitting.

How to apply

  • Apply online through the StreetsLA Building Materials Permit application (bsspermits.lacity.org), or have your contractor apply.
  • Expect a StreetsLA pre-inspection and possible corrections; LADOT may require a traffic control plan.
  • Approved permits run a maximum of 60 days.
  • Separately, confirm your hauler holds a LASAN Waste Hauler (AB 939 Compliance) permit if the box will hold mixed construction or demolition debris.

Fees

A Building Materials Permit dollar amount is not printed on the StreetsLA page fetched October 7, 2026 (StreetsLA does say there is no charge if you hold a BOE A- or B-permit). We did not invent a number.

What not to put in

Ask before you load. Keep household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries), tires, appliances that hold refrigerant, and anything flammable or toxic out of a mixed roll-off unless the hauler confirms it can take it. Dumpsters.com Los Angeles’s page says flammable, toxic, and hazardous materials are not allowed in its dumpsters. Local household-hazardous-waste drop-off rules were not re-checked for this Los Angeles page — ask the hauler or the city before you load gray-area items.

LA Sanitation’s C&D Recycling Program page says all mixed C&D debris generated in the city must be transported by a permitted private waste hauler and processed at a City-certified facility, and that non-compliance penalties of up to $5,000 are assessed for every load not taken to certified processors. That is the hauler’s obligation — but hire one that is on LASAN’s permitted list.

Gotchas

  • The StreetsLA Building Materials page never says “dumpster.” Confirm with StreetsLA before using the sidewalk or street.
  • Building Materials Permits max out at 60 days.
  • No StreetsLA charge if you already have a BOE A- or B-permit (StreetsLA).
  • LADOT may require a traffic control plan; BOE may be involved.
  • Mixed C&D debris must go with a LASAN-permitted hauler to a City-certified processor.
  • Dumpsters.com LA delivery envelope: about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance — hillside driveways and overhead lines can rule out a drop.
  • HOA and historic-overlay rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
