Dumpster rental in Sacramento — size, street permit, typical price

This page is for Sacramento homeowners who need a residential roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers which size fits the work, when a City of Sacramento Minor Encroachment Street Use permit is required, typical published prices (each source labeled separately), and what Sacramento County household-hazardous-waste rules will not take in a box.

Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched September 2, 2026.

Size chooser

Uses Dumpsters.com Sacramento size notes (verified 8/29/2026) plus Dumpster Champs’ June 27, 2026 local 7-day list. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means.

10 yard

Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.

Dumpsters.com Sacramento: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).

Dumpster Champs (June 27, 2026): garage cleanouts, small bathroom remodels, small landscaping; 1 ton included on that 7-day list (their table prints a 12′ × 8′ × 3.5′ box for the 10-yard).

20 yard

Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway. Most-used residential size on the local 2026 7-day list.

Dumpsters.com Sacramento: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 4.5′; about 6 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpster Champs (June 27, 2026): kitchen remodels, roofing up to about 25 squares, large cleanouts; 2 tons included on that 7-day list. They call the 20-yard the best all-around residential choice in Sacramento.

Dumpster Champs (June 27, 2026): construction debris and major renovations; 3 tons included on that 7-day list.

Dumpsters.com Sacramento: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads.

Street permit

Required? YES — City of Sacramento public right-of-way (Minor Encroachment Street Use).

City of Sacramento Minor Encroachment Permit Instructions (DE-300, rev. 09/08/2025) define Street Use as a “no dig” permit that generally covers temporary placement of cranes, dumpsters, scaffolding over sidewalk, temporary signs, and storage pods. The Street Use application form (DE-302) has an explicit DUMPSTER checkbox and states that by signing, the owner agrees to comply with Sacramento City Code Chapter 12.12.

DE-500 Encroachment Permit Processing Guidelines (rev. 03/26/2025) lists Street Use ENC records with examples that include dumpsters and moving PODS. The city’s Minor Permits and DE-300 pages describe this program for containers in the public right-of-way. They do not publish a “driveway = no permit” rule. Do not assume a strip that looks like your yard is private; confirm with Development Engineering before you place a box.

How to apply

  • Apply for Street Use through Accela — Citizen Permit Portal (Sacramento Accela portal). DE-300 says Street Use can be submitted through Accela; Public Works questions for minor/major encroachment: DE@cityofsacramento.org; Street Use / encroachment questions on DE-300: Encroachments@cityofsacramento.org.
  • DE-302 final processing: approved permits remain active a maximum of 60 calendar days from approval or until the Estimated Start Date listed, whichever occurs first. Contractor must contact the Construction Inspection Help Desk at 916-808-6810 a minimum of 1 week before the requested start date to schedule a preconstruction meeting; otherwise the permit can expire.
  • Extensions or start-date changes: email Encroachments@cityofsacramento.org with the project address and ENC # in the subject line (DE-302).
  • Liability insurance on the Street Use form: general liability $500,000 combined single limit; City of Sacramento listed as certificate holder; City of Sacramento, its officials, agents, employees & volunteers as additional insured (DE-302 checklist). Development Engineering: 300 Richards Blvd., 3rd Floor, Sacramento, CA 95811; phone 916-808-8300.

Fees (two official numbers — labeled separately; not mashed)

  • Private Development Fee Schedule, effective 07/01/2025: Encroachment Permit — Temporary Street Use, flat fee 0–$75 (item 3.10; Resolution 2019-0157).
  • DE-500 Encroachment Permit Processing Guidelines, rev. 03/26/2025: Street Use column — Fee due at application = $150; can be paid over the phone by credit card at 916-808-6810.

Those two city documents disagree on the Street Use dollar amount. This page prints both with dates and does not invent a single “typical” fee. DE-300 also says the Permit Deposit for encroachment work is calculated from estimated review and inspection hours and invoiced after intake — that language sits next to Construction requirements; confirm with Development Engineering which dollar applies to a residential dumpster Street Use record.

Placement

  • This Street Use track is for temporary dumpsters / pods (and other listed no-dig uses) in the public right-of-way (DE-300 / DE-500).
  • Traffic Control Plan templates are linked from the Minor Permits page when a TCP is required for the site. DE-300’s detailed TCP rules are listed under Construction requirements; ask Encroachments whether your dumpster placement needs a template or a site-specific plan.
  • If the work digs, trenches, or installs new facilities in the ROW, that is Construction Encroachment, not Street Use.

Typical price

Sourced ranges, not a single quote. Each row is labeled with the date and what that page actually measures. These are not mashed into one invented band.

Dumpsters.com Sacramento — blended roll-off

Verified 8/29/2026. All sizes blended. The dollar range is not labeled 7-day on that city block. By-size dollars are not printed.

$563–$1,140. Average $801.

Extra fees if you exceed tonnage, keep the box longer, or toss prohibited items. Size dimensions and 60 ft / 23–25 ft clearance notes on the same page. FAQ on that page also says a Street Use Encroachment Permit is required for sidewalk/street/public access; that FAQ is a hauler summary, not the municipal form set — use DE-300 / DE-302 for the city rule.

Dumpster Champs — explicit 7-day list

Last updated June 27, 2026. Single-vendor published flat rate: delivery, pickup, 7-day rental, and a weight allowance.

Size 7-day list Tons included
10 yard$6951 ton
20 yard$7952 tons
30 yard$8953 tons
40 yard$9954 tons

Hometown — 20-yard Sacramento listings

Fetched 9/2/2026. Page headline for mid-sized roll-offs (14–20 cubic yards): generally $489–$650. Listed start below is not averaged with that headline. Period and tons are what that row printed.

What they printed Starting at Period on page
Amazon Dumpster, 20 yard$650up to 7 days, 2 tons

Same page: “19 Dumpster Companies Offer 20 yard dumpsters in Sacramento, CA.” Other company cards on that list did not print a dollar start in the fetch we captured, so they are omitted.

A dated 2026 blended city index sits near $801 average ($563–$1,140). An explicit 7-day vendor list prints a 20-yard at $795. A Hometown mid-size headline sits lower ($489–$650) with one printed 7-day 20-yard start at $650. Weight limits and overages are usually extra — we did not invent those numbers beyond what a source printed.

What not to put in

From Sacramento County Waste Management & Recycling household-hazardous-waste rules. These items do not go in a residential dumpster headed to ordinary trash disposal. Take HHW to a regional drop-off — not the curb cart or the roll-off.

  • Paint (oil-based or latex) and paint thinners
  • Gasoline and other flammables; solvents; acids
  • Motor oil and filters; brake / transmission fluid; antifreeze; cooking oil
  • Household cleaners; pesticides and herbicides; pool chemicals and poisons
  • Household batteries and car batteries
  • Fluorescent tubes and bulbs (and ballasts removed from fixtures)
  • Mercury thermometers and switches
  • Aerosol cans containing product
  • Propane tanks (barbecue style) — HHW drop-off only under facility limits; not for a dumpster
  • Home-generated needles and syringes (seal in hard plastic or metal containers for HHW; not a dumpster)
  • Medications (non-controlled at some HHW sites; controlled substances use separate take-back)
  • Ammunition, asbestos, explosives, medical waste, radioactive materials, PCBs, compressed industrial gas (not accepted at NARS HHW either)

Sacramento County: “Never place HHW in curbside collection carts.” Residents can drop off up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of HHW per month free at NARS HHW (4450 Roseville Road, North Highlands, CA 95660). Hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day). City of Sacramento also operates HHW at Sacramento Recycling and Transfer Station (SRTS), 8491 Fruitridge Rd. (Tuesday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. on the regional brochure). Questions: 3-1-1 or SacGreenTeam / Utilities channels on county pages.

California e-waste and appliances with refrigerants need separate handling. Dumpsters.com Sacramento lists electronics as accepted with a possible $35–$75 fee per item — follow county HHW / e-waste programs for hazardous and regulated items, not the hauler marketing line alone.

Gotchas

  • Street Use is the dumpster / pod track (DE-300 / DE-302 DUMPSTER checkbox). Digging or new facilities is Construction Encroachment.
  • Two official fee figures exist: Fee Schedule Temporary Street Use 0–$75 (effective 07/01/2025) and DE-500 Street Use $150 due at application (rev. 03/26/2025). Confirm which applies before you budget.
  • Approved Street Use permits max out at 60 calendar days from approval or the listed start date (DE-302). Call Construction Inspection Help Desk (916-808-6810) at least 1 week before start or the permit can expire.
  • $500k combined single limit liability insurance with City additional-insured language is on the Street Use checklist (DE-302). Confirm whether the hauler holds that for a residential drop.
  • The city pages we fetched never published a driveway-is-free rule. Private property is simply outside this Street Use ROW program.
  • HHW does not go in the roll-off. NARS and SRTS accept household hazardous waste; ammunition, asbestos, and medical waste are not accepted at NARS HHW.
  • Dumpsters.com Sacramento delivery envelope: about 60 ft of length and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (trees and wires on older Midtown / Land Park / Curtis Park lots are a real constraint).
  • HOA rules and CC&Rs are not the city Street Use permit. Check them separately.

Sacramento dumpster FAQs

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Sacramento?
Yes for City of Sacramento public right-of-way placement under Minor Encroachment Street Use. Prefer private driveway when possible. Sacramento does not publish a “driveway = no permit” rule on the sources used here.
Does a Sacramento driveway dumpster need Street Use?
Keeping the box entirely on private property generally avoids the public-ROW Street Use path described here. Confirm sidewalk and curb lines; HOA rules are separate from the city permit.
What size dumpster do most Sacramento homeowners need?
Most Sacramento residential jobs land on a 10-yard for heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick, small roofing) or a 20-yard for kitchen/mixed cleanouts. A 30–40 yard needs serious driveway length and height clearance. Weight and included tons beat “bigger is better.” See the Size chooser on this page for Sacramento-specific notes.
What does a typical dumpster rental cost in Sacramento?
Dumpsters.com Sacramento shows a blended $563–$1,140 (average $801, verified 8/29/2026). Other labeled sources on this page list additional figures. Confirm included days, tons, and overage.
What should I not put in a dumpster in Sacramento?
Keep household hazardous waste, wet paint/solvents, batteries, tires, Freon appliances, asbestos, medical waste, and similar banned items out of a mixed roll-off. Use the “What not to put in” section on this Sacramento page for local HHW / landfill rules, and ask the hauler before you load gray-area items.
