Dumpster rental in Madison — size, street permit, typical price

This page is for Madison homeowners renting a roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers size, the Traffic Engineering Street Occupancy Permit (what the city page actually says), and published prices with each source labeled.

Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched October 13, 2026: official permit pages and published prices fetched that day.

Driveway or street? Decide before you call

Placement decides the permit in Madison. Run these checks before you book.

  1. Will the whole box sit on your driveway or lot? Then it stays off the public right-of-way. The Madison page we fetched does not publish an explicit driveway exemption, so confirm with the city.
  2. Street, curb lane, sidewalk, or alley? Madison’s Street Occupancy Permit is used for placing dumpsters in the city right-of-way.
  3. Lead time: At least one week before the occupancy; valid up to 90 days.

Have these five answers ready when you call

  • Job type and debris: remodel, roof, cleanout, yard, or heavy material like concrete, dirt, or brick.
  • Size you think you need (10 or 20 yard covers most homes; see the Size chooser below).
  • Placement: driveway, yard, or street, and roughly how much straight approach the truck gets.
  • Drop-off date and how many days you need it.
  • Questions for the quote: included tons, overage per ton, extra-day charge, and anything the hauler won’t take.

Comparing more than one quote? Use the 7-day quote checklist so the numbers line up.

Size chooser

Dumpsters.com Madison (verified 10/10/2026) lists 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30-yard boxes. Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway, and measure driveway length and overhead clearance.

10 yard

Best for: small cleanouts, a bathroom remodel, or heavy debris like concrete or brick filled only partway.

Dumpsters.com Madison lists this size

20 yard

Best for: the common residential default — kitchen remodels, basement or attic cleanouts, mixed debris.

Dumpsters.com Madison lists this size

30 yard

Best for: large renovations, additions, or whole-house cleanouts. Check driveway length first.

Street permit

Required? YES — Madison’s Street Occupancy Permit is used for placing dumpsters in the city right-of-way.

City of Madison Traffic Engineering says a Street Occupancy Permit is needed when materials or machinery are on or over streets, the terrace, sidewalks, alleys, or public grounds, and “this permit is also used for the placement of dumpsters in the City right-of-way.”

For dumpster-only permits there is “a flat $50 fee per 30 days or portion thereof.” Apply at least one week ahead; a permit is valid for a maximum of 90 days.

The application needs a PDF site plan with the box’s length, width, and position measured from the back of curb or edge of pavement, and a certificate of insurance filed with City Risk Management.

How to apply

  • Apply online through the city’s Traffic Engineering Street Occupancy Permit system (account help: 608-261-4293).
  • Attach a site plan showing the box’s dimensions and position.
  • Send the certificate of insurance to certificates@cityofmadison.com.

Fees

  • Dumpster-only Street Occupancy Permit: flat $50 per 30 days or portion thereof

Dumpsters.com Madison — blended roll-off

Information last verified 10/10/2026 (fetched 10/13/2026). All sizes blended. Not labeled 7-day. By-size dollars are not printed.

$535–$885. Average $693.

Blended Madison index from one published source. Weight limits, overage per ton, and extra days are usually extra; we did not invent those numbers.

The call button on this page is a tracked partner line for a rental quote (see the disclosure next to the button), not a Madison permit-desk number. Permit fees in the section above are municipal charges, not a rental price.

What not to put in

Ask before you load. Keep household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries), tires, appliances that hold refrigerant, and anything flammable or toxic out of a mixed roll-off unless the hauler confirms it can take it. Dumpsters.com Madison’s page says flammable, toxic, and hazardous materials are prohibited. Local household-hazardous-waste drop-off rules were not checked for this Madison page — ask the hauler or the city.

Gotchas

  • The city permit fee is separate from the hauler’s rental price.
  • Lead time: At least one week before the occupancy; valid up to 90 days.
  • Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway.
  • HOA, co-op, and landlord rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
