Dumpster rental in Tucson — size, street permit, typical price

This page is for Tucson homeowners renting a roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers size, the TDOT Traffic Control Permit (what the city page actually says), and published prices with each source labeled.

Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched October 13, 2026: official permit pages and published prices fetched that day.

Driveway or street? Decide before you call

Placement decides the permit in Tucson. Run these checks before you book.

  1. Will the whole box sit on your driveway or lot? Then it stays off the public right-of-way. The Tucson page we fetched does not publish an explicit driveway exemption, so confirm with the city.
  2. Street, curb lane, sidewalk, or alley? A City of Tucson Traffic Control Permit is required when a refuse collector is placed on city right-of-way.
  3. Lead time: not printed on the city page — check with the city and order early.

Have these five answers ready when you call

  • Job type and debris: remodel, roof, cleanout, yard, or heavy material like concrete, dirt, or brick.
  • Size you think you need (10 or 20 yard covers most homes; see the Size chooser below).
  • Placement: driveway, yard, or street, and roughly how much straight approach the truck gets.
  • Drop-off date and how many days you need it.
  • Questions for the quote: included tons, overage per ton, extra-day charge, and anything the hauler won’t take.

Comparing more than one quote? Use the 7-day quote checklist so the numbers line up.

Size chooser

Dumpsters.com Tucson (verified 10/10/2026) lists 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40-yard boxes. Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway, and measure driveway length and overhead clearance.

10 yard

Best for: small cleanouts, a bathroom remodel, or heavy debris like concrete or brick filled only partway.

Dumpsters.com Tucson lists this size

20 yard

Best for: the common residential default — kitchen remodels, basement or attic cleanouts, mixed debris.

Dumpsters.com Tucson lists this size

30 yard

Best for: large renovations, additions, or whole-house cleanouts. Check driveway length first.

Dumpsters.com Tucson lists this size

40 yard

Best for: big gut jobs with loose, bulky debris; avoid dense loads that hit the weight cap early.

Street permit

Required? YES — a City of Tucson Traffic Control Permit is required when a refuse collector is placed on city right-of-way.

Tucson’s Mobile Storage Permitting Requirement sheet says: “When a refuse collector or mobile storage unit is placed on City of Tucson rights-of-way a City of Tucson Traffic Control Permit is required.” Right-of-way “typically consists of the roadway, sidewalk easement (paved or unpaved) and alley.”

Units in the roadway are treated as hazards and need a Type II barricade with a Type ‘A’ flasher at each end facing traffic. Downtown lane placements need a traffic control plan.

Downtown, 4th Avenue, and University-area placements may also need a reserved loading zone or hooded meters for an extra fee (Park Tucson). Units placed without a permit and traffic control “could be subject to fines.”

How to apply

  • Contact the TDOT Permit Center, 201 N. Stone Ave., 4th floor, tdotpermitcenter@tucsonaz.gov, or Engineering at 520-791-5100.
  • Rent the Type II barricades with Type ‘A’ flashers (the city says any local barricade company can help).
  • For Downtown, 4th Avenue, or University areas, call Park Tucson at 791-5071 about meters or loading zones.

Fees

  • Traffic Control Permit: $75.00 per 30 consecutive days

From the City of Tucson Mobile Storage Permitting Requirement sheet. Meter-hooding and loading-zone fees are extra and not printed there.

Dumpsters.com Tucson — blended roll-off

Information last verified 10/10/2026 (fetched 10/13/2026). All sizes blended. Not labeled 7-day. By-size dollars are not printed.

$390–$909. Average $605.

Blended Tucson index from one published source. Weight limits, overage per ton, and extra days are usually extra; we did not invent those numbers.

The call button on this page is a tracked partner line for a rental quote (see the disclosure next to the button), not a Tucson permit-desk number. Permit fees in the section above are municipal charges, not a rental price.

What not to put in

Ask before you load. Keep household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries), tires, appliances that hold refrigerant, and anything flammable or toxic out of a mixed roll-off unless the hauler confirms it can take it. Local household-hazardous-waste drop-off rules were not checked for this Tucson page — ask the hauler or the city.

Gotchas

  • The city permit fee is separate from the hauler’s rental price.
  • Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway.
  • HOA, co-op, and landlord rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
