Dumpster rental in Atlanta — size, street permit, typical price
This page is for Atlanta homeowners who need a residential roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers which size fits the work, when a City of Atlanta right-of-way dumpster permit is required, typical published prices (each source labeled separately), and what city solid-waste rules will not take in a box.
Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched August 31, 2026.
Size chooser
Uses Dumpsters.com Atlanta size notes (verified 8/29/2026) plus Dumpster Champs’ August 30, 2026 local 7-day list. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means.
10 yard
Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.
Dumpsters.com Atlanta: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not ATLDOT).
Dumpster Champs (August 30, 2026): garage cleanouts, small bathroom remodels, small landscaping; they print a 12′ × 8′ × 3.5′ box and a 1-ton weight allowance on that 7-day list.
Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway. Dumpster Champs calls this the best all-around residential choice in Atlanta.
Dumpster Champs (August 30, 2026): major demolition and large commercial work; 4 tons included on that 7-day list. They flag it for loose bulky debris, not dense concrete or brick.
Required?YES — City of Atlanta public right-of-way.
It is unlawful to place or maintain a dumpster in the public right-of-way unless the applicant first obtains a dumpster permit from the Department of Transportation. Authority: Atlanta Code §138-61 (Dumpsters in the right-of-way), restated on ATLDOT’s Dumpster / Pod Replacement Permits page and in the City of Atlanta Public Right-of-Way Manual §3.6. A dumpster here means any container or storage box used for construction debris, demolition debris, or other discarded material (not a refuse compactor, grease container, or ordinary refuse cart).
The city’s pages describe this program for containers in the public right-of-way. They do not publish a “driveway = no permit” rule. §138-61(d)(2) goes the other way: no ROW dumpster permit is issued unless the applicant first demonstrates that the dumpster cannot be accommodated on private property. Do not assume a strip that looks like your yard is private; confirm with ATLDOT before you place a box.
How to apply
Apply online through the City of Atlanta ATLDOT Apply4 portal (Dumpster/POD Placement). ATLDOT’s dumpster page points the same program there.
The application must include a Certificate of Liability Insurance with the City of Atlanta listed as certificate holder / additional insured. The dumpster/container provider must complete a Certification Compliance agreement (ATLDOT dumpster page; ROW Manual §3.6; §138-61(d)(3)). The posted pages do not print a liability dollar amount — the code leaves the amount to the city’s risk manager — so no dollar figure is listed here.
A notarized affidavit and a copy of identification are required for all Apply4 applications (Apply4 portal, fetched 8/31/2026).
Apply4 hours: Monday–Friday, 8:15 a.m.–5:00 p.m., except holidays. Permits are not processed on weekends or holidays. Questions: ATLDOTPermits@atlantaga.gov or 404-330-6501 (Apply4 portal).
Duration of a dumpster permit is not more than six months. An extension is a new permit (§138-61(d)(1)).
Fees (Atlanta Code §138-61(e); same numbers on the ATLDOT Traffic Permit Fee Schedule, June 2024, still linked from Apply4 as of 8/31/2026)
Fixed dumpster/POD permit fee: $20.00
Up to 100 linear feet of any portion of the adjacent curb lane: $10.00 per calendar day
101 to 200 linear feet: $15.00 per calendar day
201 to 300 linear feet: $20.00 per calendar day
Over 300 linear feet: $25.00 per calendar day
Blocked parking meters / emergency no-parking signs: additional recovery fee where applicable (§138-61(e)(6)). The June 2024 fee schedule prints a miscellaneous parking-meter fee of $17.00 per day per meter.
A typical residential roll-off is well under 100 linear feet. A 7-day street placement at the published ≤100-ft rate is $20 + $70 = $90, plus any meter recovery. Do not mix this with the separate lane-closure / sidewalk-closure fees on the same schedule.
Not within 20 ft of any parking space designated for persons with disabilities
Not within 20 ft of any pedestrian crosswalk
Not within 30 ft of any intersection
Not within 15 ft of any fire hydrant
Not on any sidewalk unless the applicant shows an alternative location is not feasible and sidewalk placement would not create a safety hazard, disrupt pedestrian or vehicular traffic, or damage property
Place the box immediately adjacent to the street address on the permit
Provider name and contact must be clearly visible on the container. Reflective tape (minimum 6 in × 4 ft vertical strip on each corner) or four vertical-panel barricades with flashing lights on the street side (Dumpster/Container Requirements PDF; §138-61(f) requires high-intensity retro-reflective sheeting on each of the four corners)
Violations: failure to obtain or keep a valid permit, missing ID/reflective material, or a box not adjacent to the permitted address. After 14 days’ notice the commissioner may cite the violator to municipal court. Penalties include permit revocation, a fine not exceeding $1,000 per day, and imprisonment not exceeding six months (§138-61(i)–(j)).
A different lane/sidewalk/full-street closure permit is required if the work also closes a travel lane, sidewalk, or street. That is not this dumpster permit. Closing a sidewalk for more than 45 days has separate pedestrian-accommodation rules (Apply4 portal).

What not to put in
From Atlanta Code Chapter 130 (solid waste) and Georgia EPD household-hazardous-waste rules. These items do not go in a residential dumpster headed to ordinary municipal solid waste or a city disposal facility / transfer station.
Hazardous materials — not in any city solid-waste disposal facility or transfer station, and not in any container used for garbage, rubbish, recovered materials, or solid wastes (Atlanta Code §130-10)
Household hazardous materials as listed in §130-11, including:
Automotive: antifreeze; batteries and battery fluids; gasoline, motor oil and other petroleum products; solvents; transmission fluid
Cleaners: bleach; disinfectants; drain openers; mold and mildew stain removers; oven cleaners; toilet-bowl cleaners; tub and tile cleaners
Home maintenance: metal polishes; latex paint; solvent-based paint; paint strippers; paint thinners; wood polishes and waxes
Pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and fertilizers containing pesticides
Miscellaneous: aerosol air fresheners; explosives; fluorescent lamps; freon; household batteries; kerosene; pool chemicals; smoke detectors; thermometers; thermostats
Liquids in the trash — Georgia EPD: garbage trucks are not allowed to pick up liquid waste (EPD Household Hazardous Waste page, fetched 8/31/2026)
Scrap tires dumped on a street, alley, or other public or private property except at an EPD-approved processor or disposal facility (Atlanta Code §130-32)
Construction and demolition waste that contains or has been contaminated by hazardous materials must be handled and disposed of separately (Atlanta Code §130-1, C&D definition).
City ATL311 (knowledge article last modified June 9, 2026) points Atlanta residents to CHaRM — the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials — for household hazardous waste and other items not accepted at the curb, by appointment only. CHaRM Atlanta: 1110 Hill Street SE, Atlanta, GA 30315 — Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 a.m.–2 p.m., Saturdays 8 a.m.–2 p.m. CHaRM DeKalb: 1225 Columbia Drive, Decatur, GA 30032 — Wednesdays 9 a.m.–2 p.m., Saturdays 8 a.m.–2 p.m. CHaRM’s 2026 accepted list (PDF dated 1/13/2026) includes paint (latex and oil), chemicals, batteries (not alkaline or car batteries), electronics/TVs, fluorescent bulbs, motor oil, and tires (car/small truck, no rims). Propane tanks are not accepted there. Book through the CHaRM site. ATL311 lists (404) 600-6386.
Gotchas
ROW permit is issued only if the applicant demonstrates the dumpster cannot be accommodated on private property (§138-61(d)(2)). That is not a “driveway is free” sentence; it is a condition of the street permit.
$20 fixed + $10/day for ≤100 linear feet (code and June 2024 fee schedule). A 7-day street placement at that band is $90, plus meter recovery if meters are blocked.
Permit duration is capped at six months; an extension is a new permit (§138-61(d)(1)).
15 ft from hydrants; 30 ft from intersections; 40 ft from bus stops; 20 ft from ADA parking and crosswalks. Sidewalk placement is the exception, not the default (§138-61(g)).
Provider name/contact and corner reflectives (or street-side barricades with flashing lights) are required. Missing ID or reflectives is a code violation.
Notarized affidavit and ID copy for every Apply4 application. Portal does not process permits on weekends or holidays.
Dumpsters.com Atlanta delivery envelope: about 60 ft of length and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (trees and wires on older in-town lots are a real constraint).
Most Atlanta alleys are not city-maintained (ROW Manual §1.1(b) lists three CBD exceptions). Confirm whether the strip is public ROW before you treat it as a free placement.
The city never published a driveway-is-free rule on the pages we fetched. Private property is simply outside this ATLDOT ROW program — and a ROW permit still requires showing private property cannot take the box.
HOA rules and CC&Rs are not the city permit. Check them separately. Dumpster Champs Atlanta (August 30, 2026) flags Buckhead, Druid Hills, and some Midtown buildings as neighborhood practice, not a city rule we sourced.
Dumpsters.com Atlanta still lists electronics as accepted with a possible $50 fee per item — follow Atlanta Code Chapter 130 and CHaRM for HHW/e-waste, not the hauler marketing line, if the load is headed to ordinary MSW.
Yes for placement in the City of Atlanta public right-of-way. Prefer a private driveway when the box can sit entirely on private property. Atlanta does not publish a “driveway = no permit” rule on the sources used here — confirm sidewalk and curb lines before delivery.
Is a driveway dumpster permit-free in Atlanta?
Private property placement that does not occupy the public ROW is the usual path to avoid a city street permit, but the city does not publish an explicit driveway exception like Minneapolis. Check HOA / historic overlay rules separately.
What size dumpster do most Atlanta homeowners need?
Most Atlanta residential jobs land on a 10-yard for heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick, small roofing) or a 20-yard for kitchen/mixed cleanouts. A 30–40 yard needs serious driveway length and height clearance. Weight and included tons beat “bigger is better.” See the Size chooser on this page for Atlanta-specific notes.
What does a typical dumpster rental cost in Atlanta?
This page’s Dumpsters.com Atlanta block shows a blended $390–$916 (average $630, verified 8/29/2026). Other labeled sources list additional by-size or vendor figures. Ask every quote for included tons, days, and overage $/ton.
What should I not put in a dumpster in Atlanta?
Keep household hazardous waste, wet paint/solvents, batteries, tires, Freon appliances, asbestos, medical waste, and similar banned items out of a mixed roll-off. Use the “What not to put in” section on this Atlanta page for local HHW / landfill rules, and ask the hauler before you load gray-area items.
