Street permit

Required? YES — Metro right-of-way.

A Trailer / Dumpster permit is required to place a trailer, dumpster, or storage unit in the Metro right-of-way. Authority: Nashville Department of Transportation Temporary Street Closure Permits page (last updated July 2, 2026), with Metro Code §13.20.020 (no obstruction in a street, alley, sidewalk, or other public way without a permit) and §13.20.030(E)(2) (the dumpster-in-ROW fee is set by the department from operating costs).

The city’s pages describe this program for containers in the Metro right-of-way. They do not publish a “driveway = no permit” rule. Do not assume a strip that looks like your yard is private; confirm with NDOT before you place a box.

How to apply

  • Apply through Nashville ePermits. NDOT’s permits hub (last updated July 14, 2026) says all right-of-way permits must go through ePermits.
  • Apply at least 2 business days before the start date, unless it is an emergency repair (NDOT permits hub).
  • Pay in full after approval. Fees are non-refundable. Cash, check, Visa, or MasterCard. Checks payable to “Metropolitan Government.” Credit/debit cards take a 2.3% convenience fee (Metro Ordinance BL2008-218; no part of that fee goes to Metro).
  • NDOT lists a Door Hanger Project Notification Requirement on the Trailer / Dumpster fee block. The HTML page does not print the hanger text; follow what ePermits asks for, or call NDOT Permits at 615-862-8782 / ndotpermits@nashville.gov.
  • Traffic control plans are required with every permit submittal, even when a lane is not closed. NDOT publishes a “Layout for a Dumpster” typical on the Traffic Control Guidelines page (last updated February 28, 2025). Templates may be used if they match the site. A site-specific, signed-and-sealed plan can be required when they do not.

Fees (NDOT Temporary Street Closure Permits, last updated July 2, 2026)

  • Trailer / dumpster / storage unit in Metro ROW: $10 per day, not to exceed $2,000
  • Violation fee: $30 per day

A 7-day street placement at the published rate is $70, under the $2,000 cap. Metro Code §13.20.030(E)(2) lets the department set that dumpster fee; the live NDOT HTML is the number this page uses. The same NDOT page lists separate Lane Closure / Street Closure / Sidewalk Closure fees ($160 for up to 5 days, then +$10/day). Those are not the dumpster fee. Do not mix them.

Placement

  • This permit is for a trailer, dumpster, or storage unit in the Metro right-of-way (NDOT dumpster fee block).
  • Use NDOT’s dumpster layout typical when the box sits in a parking lane or otherwise occupies ROW (Traffic Control Guidelines).
  • If the placement also closes a sidewalk, bike lane, or travel lane, that is a different NDOT permit type with different fees and traffic-control rules.

Metro Code §13.20.050 requires a $40,000 permit bond and $1 million public-liability insurance (Metro named as additional insured) before an excavation or obstruction permit is issued. NDOT’s Trailer / Dumpster fee block does not mention a homeowner exception. Confirm with NDOT whether a residential dumpster permit is issued under that bond rule, or whether the hauler holds it.

Private Collection Permits (Metro Code §10.20.100) are an annual Waste Services permit for anyone who collects, hauls, or transports waste in Davidson County. That is the hauler’s sticker, not the homeowner’s street-placement permit.

A dated 2026 20-yard advertised median sits near $515. Explicit 7-day vendor lists in 2026 print a 20-yard from $500 to $695 depending on the hauler and tons included. Blended city indexes run wider ($419–$950). Weight limits and overages are usually extra — we did not invent those numbers beyond what a source printed.

What not to put in

From Metro Nashville Waste Services household-hazardous-waste and electronic-waste rules. These items do not go in a residential dumpster that is headed to ordinary trash disposal. Take HHW to East or Ezell Pike. Take e-waste to East, Ezell Pike, or Omohundro.

  • Oil-based paint, paint thinner, varnish, and stains accepted as HHW (not latex)
  • Gasoline, lighter fluid, and other fuels
  • Motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid, windshield-washer fluid
  • Household cleaners, bleach, drain opener, oven cleaner, toilet-bowl cleaner, tub and tile cleaner
  • Pesticides, insecticides, weed killer, pool chemicals, rat and mouse poison, flea collars
  • Rechargeable batteries and automobile / lead-acid batteries
  • Fluorescent tubes, CFLs, and mercury thermometers
  • Adhesives, caulk, and solvents listed on the HHW acceptable list
  • Electronic waste (Metro Code §10.20.095: e-waste is not allowed in waste containers and should be recycled)
  • Ammunition, explosives, fireworks, and flares (not accepted at HHW; convenience centers also list ammunition, fireworks, and flares as not accepted)
  • Propane tanks (not accepted at HHW)
  • Industrial, commercial, or business-generated hazardous waste

Latex or water-based paint is not accepted at HHW. Metro’s latex-paint policy (effective January 1, 2014; PDF still posted) and the curbside trash guidelines (last updated July 9, 2025) say dry leftover latex with the lid off or with cat litter, then put the dried can in regular trash. That is not a license to pour liquid paint into a dumpster. Containers with liquids must be emptied before they go in the trash.

Needles: Metro HHW says medical waste is not accepted at HHW. Needles can go in a red sharps container or a two-liter bottle with the lid, then in your trash container (HHW page, last updated April 22, 2026). Unused or expired medications are also not accepted at HHW.

Gotchas

  • $10 per day in Metro ROW, cap $2,000; $30 per day if you skip the permit (NDOT, July 2, 2026).
  • Apply in ePermits at least 2 business days before placement (NDOT permits hub, July 14, 2026).
  • Door hanger project notification is listed on the Trailer / Dumpster fee block. Follow ePermits / NDOT, not a hauler FAQ.
  • A dumpster layout typical exists. Traffic control plans are required with every permit submittal, including pedestrian and cyclist control if a sidewalk, crosswalk, or bike lane is touched.
  • Closing a sidewalk, bike lane, or travel lane is a different permit and a different fee than Trailer / Dumpster.
  • Metro Code obstruction permits can require a $40,000 bond and $1 million insurance. Confirm with NDOT whether the hauler holds that for a residential dumpster.
  • Electronic waste is banned from waste containers (Metro Code §10.20.095), including a roll-off. Dumpsters.com Nashville still lists electronics as accepted with a possible $75 fee per item — follow Metro code, not the hauler marketing line.
  • The city never published a driveway-is-free rule on the pages we fetched. Private property is simply outside this NDOT ROW program.
  • Dumpsters.com Nashville delivery envelope: about 60 ft of length and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (trees and wires on older East Nashville / 12 South lots are a real constraint).
  • HOA rules and CC&Rs are not the Metro permit. Check them separately (Belle Meade, Green Hills, Forest Hills, and some Gulch buildings are the usual local caution, but that is neighborhood practice, not a city rule we sourced).
