Dumpster rental in Raleigh — size, street permit, typical price
This page is for Raleigh / Wake County homeowners who need a residential roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers which size fits the work, when a City of Raleigh right-of-way permit is required, typical published prices (each source labeled separately), and what Wake County household-hazardous-waste rules will not take in a box.
Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched September 4, 2026.
Size chooser
Uses Dumpsters.com Raleigh size notes (verified 8/29/2026) plus Dumpster Champs’ August 30, 2026 local 7-day list. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means.
10 yard
Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.
Dumpsters.com Raleigh: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).
Dumpster Champs (August 30, 2026): garage cleanouts, small bathroom remodels, small landscaping; 1 ton included on that 7-day list (their table prints a 12′ × 8′ × 3.5′ box for the 10-yard).
Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway. Most-used residential size on the local 2026 7-day list.
Dumpster Champs (August 30, 2026): kitchen remodels, roofing up to about 25 squares, large cleanouts; 2 tons included on that 7-day list. They call the 20-yard the best all-around residential choice in Raleigh.
Dumpster Champs (August 30, 2026): major demolition and large commercial work; 4 tons included on that 7-day list. They flag it for loose bulky debris, not dense concrete or brick.
Required?YES — City of Raleigh public right-of-way (street / parking space).
The City of Raleigh’s official Right of Way Provisions PDF states: “Any Dumpster or Portable Storage Device (POD) is required to have a permit to be in the right of way.” Transportation’s Right-of-Way Services page (updated Jul 6, 2026) says Right-of-Way staff works with Raleigh Parking to issue permits for legal parking spaces used for dumpsters, portable storage devices, or projects that need parking for setup. The same page: “Any person that wishes to install an object in, or occupy the right-of-way (ROW), must obtain a permit.”
Those municipal sources describe this program for containers in the public right-of-way. They do not publish a “driveway = no permit” rule. Do not assume a strip that looks like your yard is private; confirm with Transportation / Right-of-Way Services before you place a box.
How to apply
Right-of-Way Services (updated Jul 6, 2026): “All ROW permit applicants must complete the application in the Permit and Development Portal prior to submitting required documentation.” Portal: permitportal.raleighnc.gov.
For “Use of Parking Spaces for Dumpsters, Storage, etc.,” required docs are a site plan and a Parking Application (temporary permit application PDF).
After approval, pick up the parking pass at the Parking office, 310 W. Martin Street. Display the pass clearly while occupying the space(s) (Right-of-Way Services page).
Other occupancy types (sidewalk, lane, full street closure) can add traffic-control / pedestrian plans, certificates of insurance, and a $5,000 performance bond for construction / repair work in the ROW. Those are separate rows — do not mix them with the dumpster parking-space row unless your placement also closes a sidewalk or lane.
The Right of Way Provisions PDF and the Right-of-Way Services occupancy table we fetched do not print a flat “dumpster permit” dollar amount. What they do say:
Dumpster / POD in a metered parking space: pay the meter rate for each day the container remains in the space (ROW Provisions — Dumpsters and PODS).
Dollar permit fee for the dumpster/parking occupancy itself: omitted here — not printed on the municipal pages/PDF we used.
Confirm the live portal total before you pay. Hauler blogs that invent a flat street-permit fee are not municipal sources.
Placement (ROW Provisions — Dumpsters and PODS)
Permit required for any dumpster or POD in the right of way.
Must meet dimensional parking standards in the Parking Section and City Code Part 11 Transportation Article J (Parking and Standing), including prohibited places, no-parking / no-stopping zones, hydrant / driveway / intersection setbacks, and curb-distance rules.
May not block a traffic lane or bike lane; leave enough room for emergency vehicles.
Warning devices (traffic cones, reflectors, or barricades with flashing lights) required at each end along the traffic side; reflective strips on the sides. Warning devices are not required if the dumpster is in a metered parking space.
Boards under the dumpster / POD to protect the road surface. Road damage is the applicant’s repair responsibility at no cost to the city.
Applicant is responsible for debris removal around the container.
Right-of-Way Services can require removal if the box was placed illegally or is a safety hazard.
No equipment, vehicle, dumpster, or stored materials in a “No Parking” area; dumpsters must be moved for special events when the city requires it.

Blended city indexes run wider ($381–$1,101). Weight limits and overages are usually extra — we did not invent those numbers beyond what a source printed.
Dumpster Controls’ August 2026 city table did not yet publish a Raleigh row (sample too thin). Omitted.
What not to put in
From Wake County Solid Waste Management household-hazardous-waste rules. These items do not go in a residential dumpster that is headed to ordinary trash disposal. Take HHW to a county collection site. Do not put HHW in household garbage.
Batteries (household, lead-acid vehicle — limit 6 at HHW, rechargeable)
Gasoline / diesel (HHW; container that can be poured, no larger than 5 gallons)
Engine cleaners, degreasers, brake fluid
Aerosols
Compact fluorescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes (limit 12, boxed)
Antifreeze, motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering / hydraulic oils, and oil filters — collected at Multi-Material Recycling Facilities, not dumped in a roll-off
Wake County HHW is for residents only (no business waste). Sites (fetched 9/4/2026): North Wake Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 9037 Deponie Drive, Raleigh, NC 27614 — Saturdays only, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; South Wake, 6150 Old Smithfield Road, Apex, NC 27539 — Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; East Wake, 5051 Wendell Blvd., Wendell, NC 27591 — Saturdays and Sundays only, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Proof of Wake County residency required. General solid-waste questions: 919-856-7400.
Service note on the county HHW page (fetched 9/4/2026): North Wake HHW is temporarily affected by fire damage; the county lists a Saturday 8 a.m.–4 p.m. collection event at the North Wake Facility in the interim. Confirm hours before you drive.
HHW does not accept ammunition, explosives, asbestos, freon/refrigerants, commercial waste, medical/infectious waste, radioactive materials, or spray-foam tanks — follow the county’s listed alternate contacts for those.
Gotchas
Any dumpster or POD in the City of Raleigh right of way needs a permit (ROW Provisions PDF).
No published flat “dumpster permit” dollar on the municipal pages/PDF we used — metered spaces still owe the daily meter rate.
Warning devices on the traffic side unless the box sits in a metered space; boards under the container; reflective strips on the sides.
Cannot block a travel lane or bike lane; must leave room for emergency vehicles.
The city never published a driveway-is-free rule on the ROW pages/PDF we fetched. Private property is simply outside this ROW program; hauler blogs that say “driveway = no permit” are not municipal sources.
Closing a sidewalk, bike lane, or travel lane is a different occupancy type with different plan, insurance, and bond requirements.
Dumpsters.com notes debris often goes to South Wake Sanitary Landfill / North Wake Multi-Materials — HHW and landfill bans still apply; do not trust a hauler “we accept electronics” line over county rules.
Dumpsters.com Raleigh delivery envelope: about 60 ft of length and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (trees and wires on older Oakwood / Boylan Heights / Five Points lots are a real constraint).
HOA rules and CC&Rs are not the city permit. Check them separately.
Yes for City of Raleigh public right-of-way (street / parking space) placement via ROW Services. Prefer private driveway when the box can sit entirely on private property. Raleigh does not publish a “driveway = no permit” rule on the sources used here.
Does driveway placement need a Raleigh ROW permit?
If the roll-off stays on private property and out of the public street / parking space, you are generally outside the ROW permit path described on this page. Confirm sidewalk and curb lines; HOA rules are separate.
What size dumpster do most Raleigh homeowners need?
Most Raleigh residential jobs land on a 10-yard for heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick, small roofing) or a 20-yard for kitchen/mixed cleanouts. A 30–40 yard needs serious driveway length and height clearance. Weight and included tons beat “bigger is better.” See the Size chooser on this page for Raleigh-specific notes.
What does a typical dumpster rental cost in Raleigh?
Dumpsters.com Raleigh shows a blended $381–$1,101 (average $644, verified 8/29/2026). Other labeled vendors on this page list additional figures. Confirm included days, tons, and overage before you book.
What should I not put in a dumpster in Raleigh?
Keep household hazardous waste, wet paint/solvents, batteries, tires, Freon appliances, asbestos, medical waste, and similar banned items out of a mixed roll-off. Use the “What not to put in” section on this Raleigh page for local HHW / landfill rules, and ask the hauler before you load gray-area items.
