Dumpster rental in Louisville — size, street permit, typical price

This page is for Louisville Metro homeowners renting a roll-off for a shotgun-house rehab, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers size, the Metro Public Works Pod or Dumpster Permit (where the box may go, what you must display, and what the application asks), and published prices with each source labeled.

Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched October 7, 2026: official permit pages and published prices fetched that day.

Driveway or street? Decide before you call

Louisville’s permit allows the parking lane but never the sidewalk. Run these three checks before you book.

  1. Will the whole box sit on your driveway? If yes, you avoid the permit. Dumpsters.com’s Louisville FAQ says you usually don’t need a permit on your property; its delivery notes call for about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of overhead clearance.
  2. Parking lane? Louisville Metro Public Works offers a “Pod or Dumpster Permit” online. Its Right-of-Way Guide says these permits allow a dumpster or storage pod in the public right-of-way, “generally in a parking lane.”
  3. Never the sidewalk. The same guide says placement of dumpsters or pods on sidewalks will not be permitted. If the curb lane won’t work, plan on the driveway.

Have these five answers ready when you call

  • Job type and debris: remodel, roof, cleanout, yard, or heavy material like concrete, dirt, or brick.
  • Size you think you need (10 or 20 yard covers most homes; see the Size chooser below).
  • Placement: driveway, yard, or street, and roughly how much straight approach the truck gets.
  • Drop-off date and how many days you need it.
  • Questions for the quote: included tons, overage per ton, extra-day charge, and anything the hauler won’t take.

Comparing more than one quote? Use the 7-day quote checklist so the numbers line up.

Size chooser

Uses Dumpsters.com Louisville size notes (verified 10/3/2026). That page lists 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 40-yard boxes; a 12-yard is about 3–4 pickup-truck loads and a 15-yard about 4–5. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means. Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway.

10 yard

Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk removal, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.

Dumpsters.com Louisville: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).

Dumpsters.com Louisville

20 yard

Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway.

Dumpsters.com Louisville: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 4.5′; about 6 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpsters.com Louisville

30 yard

Best for: garage demolition, home additions, estate cleanouts, large-scale lawn work. Needs a long driveway or a permitted curb space.

Dumpsters.com Louisville: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 6′; about 9 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpsters.com Louisville

40 yard

Best for: home flipping, warehouse cleanouts, multi-unit renovations, storefront remodels. Typical box is about 8 ft tall.

Dumpsters.com Louisville: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads. Prefer loose bulky debris over dense concrete or brick that blows the weight cap early.

Street permit

Required? YES — Louisville Metro Public Works Pod or Dumpster Permit for the right-of-way (generally the parking lane; sidewalks not permitted).

Louisville Metro Public Works’ Right of Way Permits and Licenses page lists the permits offered online through its Business Portal, including the Pod or Dumpster Permit.

The Metro Right-of-Way Guide & Utility Policy, Section 3.04, says Dumpster and Pod Permits “are granted to allow placement of either a dumpster or pod within the Public Right-of-Way, generally in a parking lane. Placement of dumpsters or pods on Sidewalks will not be permitted.”

The online application asks, at a minimum, for applicant and contact information, the start and end dates, and the container type (pod or dumpster). The permit must be on site and clearly displayed at all times — failure to have it on site is grounds for removal and possible fines. Containers in the right-of-way must have reflective material or other secondary traffic control devices, and Public Works may require a traffic control plan. The permittee is responsible for public safety for the whole permit.

The Metro pages do not publish a driveway exception sentence; keep the box on private property to stay outside the permit.

How to apply

  • Log in or create an account in the Louisville Metro Business Portal and choose “Pod or Dumpster Permit.”
  • Enter applicant/contact details, start and end dates, and container type.
  • Keep the permit displayed on site, and make sure the box has reflective material or other traffic control devices.
  • Ask your hauler whether it applies or expects you to.

Fees

A Pod or Dumpster Permit dollar amount is not printed on the Louisville Metro pages fetched October 7, 2026. Ask Public Works or your hauler; we did not invent a number.

What not to put in

Ask before you load. Keep household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries), tires, appliances that hold refrigerant, and anything flammable or toxic out of a mixed roll-off unless the hauler confirms it can take it. Dumpsters.com Louisville’s page says flammable, toxic, and hazardous materials are not allowed in its dumpsters. Local household-hazardous-waste drop-off rules were not re-checked for this Louisville page — ask the hauler or the city before you load gray-area items.

Gotchas

  • Sidewalk placement is not permitted — parking lane or private property only.
  • The permit must be displayed on site at all times, or the box can be removed and fined.
  • Reflective material or other traffic control devices are required on containers in the right-of-way.
  • Public Works may require a traffic control plan.
  • No permit fee printed on the Metro pages — ask before you assume.
  • Dumpsters.com Louisville delivery envelope: about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance.
  • HOA, co-op, and landlord rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
