Dumpster rental in Houston — size, street permit, typical price
This page is for Houston / Harris County homeowners who need a residential roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers which size fits the work, when a City of Houston mobility permit is required for a street or sidewalk obstruction, typical published prices (each source labeled separately), and what City of Houston Environmental Service Centers and Harris County household-hazardous-waste rules will not take in a box.
Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched October 5, 2026: prices, permit fees, and the Mobility FAQ dumpster rule re-checked.
Driveway or street? Decide before you call
Most Houston homeowners never need the city permit. Run these three checks, in order, before you book a box.
Will the whole box sit on your driveway or yard? If yes, and nothing hangs over the sidewalk or curb lane, you are outside the street-obstruction permit described below. Plan on about 60 ft of straight approach and 23–25 ft of overhead clearance for the truck (Dumpsters.com Houston delivery notes), which rules out some oak-canopy and low-wire lots.
Does any part of it touch the street or sidewalk? Then the city’s Mobility Permitting FAQ applies: street storage of a dumpster is prohibited unless it sits inside a construction work zone, protected by traffic control devices, and permitted. That means a HPWMP1001 mobility permit, a certificate of insurance naming the City of Houston, and possibly a traffic control plan.
Need the street? Apply at least ten business days before delivery (the FAQ’s lead time; processing can take up to 10 business days), then schedule the drop. Renting metered parking spaces does not replace the permit (same FAQ).
Calls to this number are tracked. You may be connected to a partner. We may be paid if the call qualifies.
Size chooser
Uses Dumpsters.com Houston size notes (verified 10/3/2026). Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means. Dumpsters.com Houston also lists 15-yard (about 4–5 pickup-truck loads) and 25-yard (about 7–8 loads) boxes if your job falls between the cards below.
10 yard
Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.
Dumpsters.com Houston: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).
Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway. Most-used residential size in the August 2026 Houston advertised sample.
Best for: garage demolition, home additions, estate cleanouts, large-scale lawn work. Often needs a two-car driveway or a permitted street space inside a work zone.
Best for: home flipping, warehouse or multi-unit renovations, storefront remodels. Typical box is about 8 ft tall.
Dumpsters.com Houston: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads. Prefer loose bulky debris over dense concrete or brick that blows the weight cap early.
Required?YES — City of Houston public roadway or sidewalk obstruction (mobility permit).
The City of Houston Permitting Center’s Roadway and Sidewalk Obstructions page (permit code HPWMP1001) states: “It shall be unlawful for any person to place, cause, or allow any impairment or obstruction of a sidewalk or roadway, except as authorized by a permit.” Statutory authority is Houston Code of Ordinances Chapter 40, Article XVII. That page is a general mobility / obstruction program — it does not use the word “dumpster” in the main description.
The city’s Mobility Permitting FAQ answers the dumpster question directly: “Storage of dumpsters on the street is prohibited unless the dumpster is contained within your construction work zone, protected by traffic control devices and permitted.” The same FAQ says the same rule for PODS.
Those municipal sources describe this program for obstructions in the public roadway or sidewalk. They do not publish a “driveway = no permit” rule. Do not assume a strip that looks like your yard is private; confirm with Houston Public Works / Mobility Permitting before you place a box.
How to apply
Apply online through GeoLink Hub (replacement for GIMS): create a company profile, attach a user profile, then open the Mobility Permit System and complete the Roadway / Sidewalk / sidewalk café / general permit application (HPWMP1001 page steps).
What you need (HPWMP1001): insurance certificate listing the City of Houston ($100,000 minimum liability for property damage per occurrence; $250,000 per person; $500,000 per occurrence); a site plan and profile of the location if required; a Traffic Control Plan if required.
Traffic control plans that need engineering review: email the traffic control review form and TCP PDF to traffic.control@houstontx.gov before submitting the mobility application; provide the approved EAM number when you apply. Phone: 832-395-3029.
Processing time: up to 10 business days. Apply at least ten business days before you need the permit unless the traffic engineer approves a shorter time (FAQ).
In person: 1002 Washington Ave, 2nd floor, Houston, TX 77002. Call 832-395-3020 before you go.
After approval: post the permit on the premises. Non-scheduled inspections happen. Single-lane closures may use standard Traffic Standards for a TCP; multi-lane or full closures need a TCP before approval. Full street closures require a 7-day public notice.
Fees (HPWMP1001 — re-checked October 5, 2026; unchanged since September 5)
Admin fee: $31.32 per permit
Partial sidewalk impairment or obstruction: $79.45 per block, per week
Full sidewalk impairment or obstruction: $125.81 per block, per week
Single lane closure on a local street: $66.21 per lane, per block, per week
Single lane on major thoroughfare / major collector outside CBD: $119.19 (off-peak) or $145.67 (peak) per lane, per block, per week
Single lane on major thoroughfare / major collector inside CBD: $139.06 (off-peak) or $178.77 (peak) per lane, per block, per week
Older Mobility FAQ PDFs print lower dollar rows. Use the live HPWMP1001 fee block when you pay. Confirm the portal total before checkout.
Typical price
Sourced ranges, not a single quote. Each row is labeled with the date and what that page actually measures. These are not mashed into one invented band.
Dumpsters.com Houston — blended roll-off
Verified 10/3/2026. All sizes blended. The dollar range is not labeled 7-day on that city block. By-size dollars are not printed.
Collected August 15–23, 2026 (published August 23, 2026). Advertised prices from company websites — not a 7-day-only filter. Sample: 4 prices, 4 companies.
20-yard median $475. Range $359–$550.
Budget Dumpster Houston — blended range
Verified 9/29/2026. Location, size, debris, weight, and rental period all move the number. Not labeled 7-day-only.
$286–$1,538.
Advertised Houston 20-yard prices in the August 2026 Dumpster Controls sample cluster around the mid-$400s to mid-$500s. Blended city indexes run much wider ($286–$1,538 / $403–$1,256). Weight limits and overages are usually extra — we did not invent those numbers beyond what a source printed.
The call button on this page is a tracked partner line for a rental quote (see the disclosure next to the button), not a City of Houston permit-desk number. Permit fees in the section above are municipal charges, not a rental price.
What not to put in
City of Houston residents should take household hazardous waste and listed e-scrap to an Environmental Service Center — not into a residential roll-off headed for ordinary trash disposal. Harris County residents outside city limits use the county HHW program instead. Do not put HHW in household garbage.
City of Houston Environmental Service Centers (accepted — do not dump in a roll-off)
Acids; aerosol cans; antifreeze; brake fluid; car waxes; degreasers; drain cleaners; household chemicals; metal polish; solvents; turpentine
Electronic scrap: computer equipment, monitors, printers, telephones, TVs (do not break down / strip; see ESC weight limits), microwaves, small electrical appliances
Tires: 5 tires per residence per month; no commercial vehicle tires
Lawn equipment with all fluids removed; plastic film / grocery bags; metal / wire clothes hangers
ESC South: 11500 S. Post Oak Rd., Houston, TX 77035 — Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. ESC North: 5614 Neches St., Houston, TX 77026 — second Thursday of each month, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Proof of address rules are on the ESC page (Texas ID + matching City of Houston utility bill or lease for bulk / tree waste; Texas ID alone for recycling-only drops).
Harris County HHW (unincorporated / county program)
The Harris County Office of the County Engineer Items Accepted / Not Accepted list treats these as HHW (containers generally 5 gallons or less): household cleaners; paint and paint-related products (latex, oil-based, varnishes, thinners — empty or dried latex is not accepted as HHW); yard products (fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides); aerosols (except Freon and mace); pool chemicals; automobile products including motor oil and antifreeze (no Freon); gasoline (20-gallon limit per day); batteries; mercury items; CFL / fluorescent / LED / halogen bulbs; household fire extinguishers; small and BBQ-sized propane cylinders; tires (max 4 per household each month); fats, oils, and greases.
County HHW does not accept electronics, traditional recyclables, radioactive waste (including smoke detectors), business / school / church waste, household appliances, medical / biological waste (including needles), explosives / ammunition, prescription medications, compressed gas cylinders other than BBQ / small propane and fire extinguishers, or ordinary heavy trash / household trash.
Gotchas
Street dumpster storage is prohibited unless the box sits inside a permitted construction work zone with traffic control devices (Mobility FAQ).
The main HPWMP1001 page never says “dumpster” — it is a general roadway / sidewalk obstruction permit. The FAQ is where dumpsters and PODS are named.
The city never published a driveway-is-free rule on the mobility pages we fetched. Hauler blogs that say “driveway = no permit” are not municipal sources.
Insurance naming the City of Houston is required for the mobility application; amounts are printed on HPWMP1001.
Processing can take up to 10 business days — order the box after you know the permit window, not before.
Full street closures need a 7-day public notice; multi-lane / full closures need a reviewed Traffic Control Plan.
Metered parking alone does not replace a mobility permit (FAQ).
Dumpsters.com Houston delivery envelope: about 60 ft of length and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (oak canopy and wires on older Heights / Montrose / East End lots are a real constraint).
City residents use ESC for HHW / e-scrap; unincorporated Harris County uses the county HHW facility — do not mix the two programs.
HOA rules and CC&Rs are not the city permit. Check them separately.
Yes when the box occupies or obstructs a City of Houston public roadway or sidewalk — that falls under the city’s mobility / roadway permit program. Prefer private driveway placement when possible. Houston does not publish a simple “driveway = no permit” rule on this page’s sources; confirm the property line and sidewalk before delivery.
Does a driveway dumpster need a Houston city permit?
If the roll-off stays entirely on private property and does not obstruct the public roadway or sidewalk, you are generally outside the street-obstruction permit path described here. Houston does not publish an explicit driveway exception sentence like Minneapolis. HOA rules are separate from the city permit.
What size dumpster do most Houston homeowners need?
Most Houston residential jobs land on a 10-yard for heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick, small roofing) or a 20-yard for kitchen/mixed cleanouts. A 30–40 yard needs serious driveway length and height clearance. Weight and included tons beat “bigger is better.” See the Size chooser on this page for Houston-specific notes.
What does a typical dumpster rental cost in Houston?
Sourced ranges on this page include Dumpsters.com Houston blended $403–$1,256 (average $707, verified 10/3/2026). Other labeled vendors on the page show additional bands. Confirm included days, tons, delivery, and overage — “7-day” is common but vendor-specific.
What should I not put in a dumpster in Houston?
Keep household hazardous waste, wet paint/solvents, batteries, tires, Freon appliances, asbestos, medical waste, and similar banned items out of a mixed roll-off. Use the “What not to put in” section on this Houston page for local HHW / landfill rules, and ask the hauler before you load gray-area items.
Can I park a dumpster on the street in Houston?
Only with a permit. The City of Houston Mobility Permitting FAQ says storage of dumpsters on the street is prohibited unless the dumpster is contained within your construction work zone, protected by traffic control devices, and permitted under the roadway and sidewalk obstruction (mobility) permit. Renting metered parking spaces does not replace that permit.
How far ahead should I apply for a Houston street dumpster permit?
At least ten business days before you need it, unless the traffic engineer approves a shorter time (Mobility Permitting FAQ). The HPWMP1001 permit page lists processing time as up to 10 business days, so line up the permit before you schedule delivery.
