Dumpster rental in Dallas — size, street permit, typical price

This page is for Dallas homeowners who need a residential roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers which size fits the work, whether the city allows a dumpster in the public right-of-way, typical published prices (each source labeled separately), and what Dallas Sanitation / Dallas County HHW and Texas MSW rules will not take in a box.

Sourced homeowner guide — not a live quote. Last researched September 9, 2026.

Size chooser

Uses Dumpsters.com Dallas size notes (verified 9/5/2026) plus Dumpster Champs’ June 27, 2026 local 7-day list. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means.

10 yard

Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk, general yard waste. Prefer this size for heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick, small roofing loads) so the weight cap is not blown.

Dumpsters.com Dallas: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).

Dumpster Champs (June 27, 2026): garage cleanouts, small bathroom remodels, small landscaping; they print a 12′ × 8′ × 3.5′ box and a 1-ton weight allowance on that 7-day list.

20 yard

Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway. Dumpster Champs calls the 20-yard the best all-around residential choice in Dallas; Dumpsters.com sizes guidance often points kitchen tear-outs here.

Dumpsters.com Dallas: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 4.5′; about 6 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpster Champs (June 27, 2026): kitchen remodels, roofing up to about 25 squares, large cleanouts; 2 tons included on that 7-day list.

30 yard

Best for: garage demolition, home additions, estate cleanouts, large-scale lawn work. Often needs a two-car driveway — street parking is not a Dallas workaround (see permit section).

Dumpsters.com Dallas: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 6′; about 9 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpster Champs (June 27, 2026): major renovations and construction debris; 3 tons included on that 7-day list.

40 yard

Best for: home flipping, warehouse or multi-unit renovations, storefront remodels. Typical box is about 8 ft tall — better on jobsites than tight residential driveways.

Dumpsters.com Dallas: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpster Champs (June 27, 2026): major demolition and large commercial work; 4 tons included on that 7-day list. Prefer loose bulky debris over dense concrete or brick.

Street permit

Required? Street / public ROW: city FAQ says dumpsters are not allowed in the Dallas right-of-way. Plan on private driveway.

The City of Dallas tornado-recovery single-family FAQ states: “Dumpsters are not allowed to be parked in the City of Dallas Right-of-Way.” The commercial tornado FAQ repeats the same sentence. That is the clearest municipal homeowner answer on street placement — plan for a private driveway or private lot, not the curb lane.

Separately, Dallas City Code Chapter 52 §301.1.2 requires a barricade permit for construction or demolition activity that stores materials, supplies, or debris on public property or within a public way, and for temporary or part-day blocking of a street or sidewalk. Public Works’ Right-of-Way Management page says a permit is required for construction work in the public right-of-way, and a traffic-control permit is required if work closes a traffic lane or blocks a sidewalk or alley. Apply in the Right-of-Way Permit Management System.

There is no published City of Dallas product named “residential dumpster street permit” with a flat weekly fee. Aggregator “$50–$75 dumpster permit” figures are not used here because they are not on dallascityhall.com. The city also does not publish a Minneapolis-style “driveway you own = no permit” sentence on a dedicated dumpster page. Private driveway placement is simply outside the ROW / barricade program when the box stays entirely on private property and does not block the sidewalk, street, alley, or parkway — confirm the property line with Public Works / 3-1-1 before you place a box.

Dumpsters.com Dallas FAQ (verified 9/5/2026): “In Dallas, you’ll need a permit if your dumpster will be placed in a public right of way.” Contact Public Works. Local hauler guidance (Advantage Waste Disposal, Aug 6, 2026) warns that a barricade permit is not automatic permission to leave a dumpster parked in the street — treat the city’s “not allowed in the ROW” FAQ as the planning rule.

How to apply (if you somehow need ROW occupancy)

  • Prefer private driveway placement. Check HOA / landlord rules separately (not a city permit).
  • ROW / barricade / traffic control: apply at rowmanagement.dallascityhall.com.
  • If the placement will close a lane or block a sidewalk or alley, submit a traffic-control plan with the application (same portal; Public Works ROW Management page).
  • Questions: Public Works ROW, 214-948-4290, pbwrowmanagement@dallascityhall.com; or City of Dallas 3-1-1 (outside city: 214-670-3111).
  • Interactive map of issued ROW permits: linked from the city’s ROW Management page.

Fees (published municipal — not a dumpster product)

  • No published flat “dumpster permit” dollar amount on the ROW Management page.
  • Barricade application fee: $34.00, plus occupancy fees per square foot per day, minimum $200.00 per permit (Dallas City Code Ch. 52 §303.5.3 as amended by council Item 24-2730, September 17, 2024). Fees are charged by the day; any fraction of a day counts as a full day. Double fee for occupancy without a permit.
  • Neighborhood block-party street closures: no fee on the same ROW page — not a dumpster permit.

Those barricade dollars are for closing / occupying usable public property. They are not a 7-day residential dumpster street product, and they do not override the city’s “dumpsters are not allowed in the ROW” FAQ. Confirm live §303.5.3 before you budget a street placement.

Placement

  • Plan on a clear private driveway or private lot. Do not park the box in the street, sidewalk, alley, or parkway.
  • Dallas City Code Sec. 18-4(b) / Sanitation alley rules: do not assume an alley drop is allowed — traffic-control applies if work blocks an alley.
  • City Sanitation is the exclusive roll-cart provider for single-family and duplex homes and does not provide dumpster or roll-off service. Temporary construction / cleanout roll-offs are rented from private companies; confirm your hauler is authorized to operate in Dallas.

Typical price

Sourced ranges, not a single quote. Each row is labeled with the date and what that page actually measures. These are not mashed into one invented band.

Dumpsters.com Dallas — blended roll-off

Verified 9/5/2026. All sizes blended. Page says most rental periods are typically 7 days. By-size dollars are not printed on that city block.

$405–$1,035. Average $682.

TapDump — typical Dallas range by size

Published April 10, 2026. Labeled “Typical Dallas range.” Rental window not specified as exactly 7 days on that table; market context on the same site clusters common 10–20 yard jobs around $325–$650.

Size Typical Dallas range
10 yard$325–$450
20 yard$425–$595
30 yard$525–$745
40 yard$625–$895

Dumpster Champs — explicit 7-day list

Last updated June 27, 2026. Single-vendor published flat rate: delivery, pickup, 7-day rental, and a weight allowance. Page warns prices may vary by location and debris.

Size 7-day list Tons included
10 yard$5951 ton
20 yard$6952 tons
30 yard$7953 tons
40 yard$8954 tons

A dated 2026 20-yard typical band sits near $425–$595 (TapDump), while an explicit 7-day vendor list prints $695 for a 20-yard with 2 tons. Dumpsters.com’s blended Dallas envelope is $405–$1,035 (verified 9/5/2026). Weight limits, overages, extra days, and any ROW pass-through are usually extra — we did not invent those beyond what a source printed.

Omitted as headlines: Frontier Waste’s $185 “small load of light debris close to our yard” floor (June 24, 2026) — not a typical 7-day residential cleanout; aggregator permit-fee guesses not on city pages; undated comparison sites below the dated 2026 vendor/aggregator quotes.

What not to put in

From Dallas Sanitation household-hazardous-chemical and brush/bulky rules, Dallas County HHW “what to bring,” and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) MSW landfill prohibitions. These items do not belong in a residential dumpster headed to ordinary trash disposal.

  • Paint, stains, solvents (wet / household hazardous) — Dallas HHW / BOPA
  • Batteries of all kinds (household, vehicle, lithium) — Dallas HHW; TCEQ lead-acid ban
  • Motor oil, antifreeze, oil filters — Dallas HHW / BOPA; TCEQ
  • Household hazardous chemicals (cleaners, pesticides, pool chemicals, aerosols with product)
  • Tires / automobile parts — Dallas bulky “no”; TCEQ whole-tire landfill ban (resident landfill tire drop-off is a separate capped program, not a mixed roll-off)
  • Appliances containing refrigerant / Freon (fridge, freezer, AC) until a certified tech recovers refrigerant — Dallas bulky + landfill “refrigerants removed”; TCEQ CFC rule
  • Asbestos-containing materials — TCEQ special waste; licensed handling
  • Medical waste, radioactive materials, smoke detectors, explosives / ammunition — Dallas County HHW “do not bring” + TCEQ
  • Electronics / TVs — city bulky not accepted; HHW takes small electronics/computers/phones, not TVs; landfill electronics are a resident drop-off path, not a free-for-all mixed load
  • Bulk / free liquids — TCEQ

Dallas Sanitation’s residential garbage page also keeps hot ashes, yard debris, concrete/rocks, clothing, large metal, dirt, and construction debris out of the regular roll cart — construction debris belongs in a proper roll-off channel with a hauler, not bulky set-out.

HHW drop-off: Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center, 11234 Plano Road, Dallas, TX 75243, (214) 553-1765. Hours and acceptable lists: city Household Hazardous Chemicals page and Dallas County HHW — What To Bring.

Landfill context (where Dumpsters.com says Dallas dumpster trash typically goes): McCommas Bluff Landfill, 5100 Youngblood Road — McCommas Bluff.

Gotchas

  • Street dumpsters: city FAQ says they are not allowed in the Dallas ROW — do not treat a barricade permit as a residential curb dumpster product.
  • No published flat municipal dumpster-permit fee; aggregator $50–$75 figures are omitted.
  • Barricade occupancy (if used) is $34 application + per-sq-ft-per-day with a $200 minimum (Ch. 52 §303.5.3 / Item 24-2730) — by the day of ROW occupancy, not a 7-day dumpster SKU.
  • Alley placement is a separate Sanitation / traffic-control problem — do not assume it is allowed.
  • HOA / gated / historic overlay rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
  • Dumpsters.com Dallas delivery envelope: about 60 ft of length and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (trees and wires on older East Dallas / Oak Cliff lots are a real constraint).
  • City Sanitation does not rent roll-offs; private franchise rules apply to haulers — ask who holds the franchise sticker before you order.
  • Weight beats yards for concrete, dirt, brick, and wet loads — a 10-yard is often safer than a half-filled 40-yard.

Dallas dumpster FAQs

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Dallas?
For street / public right-of-way placement, the City of Dallas FAQ states dumpsters are not allowed in the Dallas ROW — plan on a private driveway or private lot. There is no published flat “residential dumpster street permit” product. A separate barricade / ROW program exists for occupying public property, but that is not a homeowner curb-dumpster SKU. Confirm property lines with Public Works or 3-1-1 before you place a box.
Can I put a dumpster on my driveway in Dallas without a city permit?
Private driveway placement that stays entirely on private property and does not block the sidewalk, street, alley, or parkway is outside the ROW program as described on this page — but Dallas does not publish a Minneapolis-style “driveway you own = no permit” sentence on a dedicated dumpster page. Check HOA / landlord rules separately. Street placement is not the workaround.
What size dumpster do most Dallas homeowners need?
Most Dallas residential jobs land on a 10-yard for heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick, small roofing) or a 20-yard for kitchen/mixed cleanouts. A 30–40 yard needs serious driveway length and height clearance. Weight and included tons beat “bigger is better.” See the Size chooser on this page for Dallas-specific notes.
What does a typical dumpster rental cost in Dallas?
This page lists sourced ranges, not one invented quote. Dumpsters.com Dallas shows a blended $405–$1,035 (average $682, verified 9/5/2026; typically ~7 days). TapDump’s Apr 2026 by-size table runs about $325–$450 (10 yard) through $625–$895 (40 yard). Dumpster Champs publishes an explicit 7-day list with weight allowances. Always confirm included tons, days, and overage with the hauler.
What should I not put in a dumpster in Dallas?
Keep household hazardous waste, wet paint/solvents, batteries, tires, Freon appliances, asbestos, medical waste, and similar banned items out of a mixed roll-off. Use the “What not to put in” section on this Dallas page for local HHW / landfill rules, and ask the hauler before you load gray-area items.
