Driveway or street? Decide before you call

Richmond names dumpsters in its Work in Streets Permit. Run these three checks before you book.

  1. Will the whole box sit on your driveway or lot? If yes, you avoid the WISP. Dumpsters.com’s Richmond FAQ says you need a permit if the dumpster will be in a public right of way; its delivery notes call for about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of overhead clearance.
  2. Street or curb lane? Richmond DPW says all work in the public right of way requires a Work in Streets Permit, and lists Dumpsters among the types of work that require one.
  3. Metered block? Losing a metered space also needs a parking permit from the Parking Division, priced at 50 percent of the daily meter charge per space per day, in addition to the WISP.

Have these five answers ready when you call

  • Job type and debris: remodel, roof, cleanout, yard, or heavy material like concrete, dirt, or brick.
  • Size you think you need (10 or 20 yard covers most homes; see the Size chooser below).
  • Placement: driveway, yard, or street, and roughly how much straight approach the truck gets.
  • Drop-off date and how many days you need it.
  • Questions for the quote: included tons, overage per ton, extra-day charge, and anything the hauler won’t take.

Comparing more than one quote? Use the 7-day quote checklist so the numbers line up.

Size chooser

Uses Dumpsters.com Richmond size notes (verified 10/3/2026). That page lists 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40-yard boxes; a 15-yard is about 4–5 pickup-truck loads. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means. Weight, not just yards, drives overage charges — fill dense debris only partway.

10 yard

Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk removal, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.

Dumpsters.com Richmond: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).

Dumpsters.com Richmond

20 yard

Best for: small home renovations, basement and attic cleanouts, downsizing before a move, repairing a driveway.

Dumpsters.com Richmond: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 4.5′; about 6 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpsters.com Richmond

30 yard

Best for: garage demolition, home additions, estate cleanouts, large-scale lawn work. Needs a long driveway or a permitted curb space.

Dumpsters.com Richmond: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 6′; about 9 pickup-truck loads.

Dumpsters.com Richmond

40 yard

Best for: home flipping, warehouse cleanouts, multi-unit renovations, storefront remodels. Typical box is about 8 ft tall.

Dumpsters.com Richmond: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads. Prefer loose bulky debris over dense concrete or brick that blows the weight cap early.

Street permit

Required? YES — Richmond DPW Work in Streets Permit (WISP) for a dumpster in the public right-of-way.

The City of Richmond DPW Right-of-Way Management page says: “All work performed within the public right of way requires a Work in Streets Permit.” Types of work that require one include Construction Staging, Dumpsters, storage pods (PODs), cranes, and temporary structures. Apply at City Hall, Room 110, or by email to Rightofway@richmondgov.com.

The city’s Right-of-Way fee schedule (Sec. 24-63) lists an application fee of $75.00 and “Dumpster (Does Not Include Metered Parking) — $40.00 per dumpster/ per week,” with a one-week minimum for per-week items. The fee is due when you submit the application and must be paid before the permit is issued.

Metered spaces (“Use of Metered Parking Spaces (Construction Vehicles, Storage Devices, Temporary Dumpsters, Etc.)”): any closure that removes metered spaces needs a parking permit from the Parking Division (Room 102, City Hall) along with the WISP; the fee equals 50 percent of the daily meter charge for each space, multiplied by the number of days.

If a contractor applies, DPW requires a certificate of insurance and contractor’s license information. The page’s storage-pod section says it usually takes about ten working days from submittal to issuance for that permit; a separate dumpster lead time is not printed. The city page does not publish a driveway exception sentence.

How to apply

  • Complete the WISP application (printed or fillable) with a site plan and a traffic control / maintenance of traffic plan; email to Rightofway@richmondgov.com or file at City Hall, Room 110, 900 East Broad St.
  • Contractor applicants add a certificate of insurance and license information.
  • Pay the fee when you submit (check, card, or online after registering); you are invoiced on entry.
  • Metered spaces: add a Parking Division permit (Room 102, City Hall). DPW also links a “Restricted Area for Dumpsters and PODS/Storage Containers” layout PDF on its Forms tab — check your block against it.

Fees (City of Richmond Right-of-Way fee schedule — fetched October 7, 2026)

  • Application fee: $75.00
  • Dumpster: $40.00 per dumpster, per week (does not include metered parking; one-week minimum)
  • Metered spaces: Parking Division permit at 50% of the daily meter charge per space, per day

The fee schedule PDF is posted under a 2019 file path; confirm the current amount with Right-of-Way Management before you pay.

$391–$1,095. Average $658.

Blended Richmond index from one published source. The WISP fees above are municipal charges, separate from the rental. Weight limits and overages are usually extra; we did not invent those numbers.

What not to put in

Ask before you load. Keep household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries), tires, appliances that hold refrigerant, and anything flammable or toxic out of a mixed roll-off unless the hauler confirms it can take it. Local household-hazardous-waste drop-off rules were not re-checked for this Richmond page — ask the hauler or the city before you load gray-area items.

Gotchas

  • All right-of-way work needs a WISP; dumpsters are named.
  • $40 per dumpster per week with a one-week minimum, plus the $75 application fee.
  • Metered spaces need a separate Parking Division permit.
  • Contractor applicants need a certificate of insurance and license info.
  • DPW links a restricted-area layout PDF for dumpsters and storage pods — check your block.
  • Dumpsters.com Richmond delivery envelope: about 60 ft of approach and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance.
  • HOA, co-op, and landlord rules are not the city permit. Check them separately.
