Dumpster rental in Tampa — size, street permit, typical price

This page is for Tampa homeowners who need a residential roll-off for a remodel, cleanout, roof, or yard job. It covers which size fits the work, when a City of Tampa right-of-way Temporary Structure permit is required, typical published prices (each source labeled separately), and what Hillsborough County household-hazardous-waste and electronics rules will not take in a box.

Size chooser

Uses Dumpsters.com Tampa size notes (verified 8/29/2026) plus Hometown September 2026 local listings where they print period and tons. Dimensions can vary by manufacturer; volume is what the size name means.

10 yard

Best for: removing a wall, remodeling a half bathroom, garage junk, general yard waste. Fill heavy material only partway so the weight cap is not blown.

Dumpsters.com Tampa: typical box 14′ × 7.5′ × 3.5′; about 3 pickup-truck loads. Driver needs about 60 ft of space and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (hauler, not the city).

Hometown (September 2026) 10-yard headline typically $250–$399. Listed starts on that page: Five Star Sanitation from $375 (up to 10 days, 7 tons); EverLoad Removals from $325 (up to 10 days, 1 ton).

Dumpsters.com Tampa: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 6′; about 9 pickup-truck loads.

Hometown August 2026 Tampa quote sample prints a 30-yard class at $563–$667 with 3 tons and 7 days on that size-class table (not mashed into the 20-yard headline).

Dumpsters.com Tampa · Hometown Tampa cost guide Aug 2026

Dumpsters.com Tampa: typical box 22′ × 7.5′ × 8′; about 12 pickup-truck loads.

Hometown’s August 2026 Tampa size-class table does not print a separate 40-yard row; Bin There Dump That’s Tampa rates page (fetched 9/1/2026) stops at 20 yard on that list.

Street permit

Required? YES — City of Tampa public right-of-way (Temporary Structure).

City of Tampa Temporary Structures page names dumpsters, trailers, PODS®, podiums, signs, tents, and port-o-lets as Temporary Structures in right of way (ROW). For those placements it says: create a Planning — right of way permit application in Accela, enter a detailed work description and the intended street(s) to be closed, and upload a Certificate of Insurance, a Site Plan showing every temporary structure/item in the ROW (must include Fire Lane location), and a Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Plan.

All installation, construction, and/or maintenance activities in City of Tampa rights of way are subject to the city’s ROW permit review (Right of Way Permitting Section). The city’s Temporary Structures and ROW pages describe this program for containers in the public right-of-way. They do not publish a “driveway = no permit” rule. Do not assume a strip that looks like your yard is private; confirm with ROW Permitting before you place a box.

How to apply

  • Apply through Accela Citizen Access for a City of Tampa Right-of-Way permit (Accela ROW portal). The Temporary Structures page says to create a Planning — right of way permit application for dumpster / trailer / PODS placements in ROW.
  • Upload Certificate of Insurance, Site Plan (with Fire Lane), and MOT Plan (Temporary Structures page). The Application Process for Submitting Standard Right of Way Permit PDF (posted 2026 on tampa.gov) also lists Proof of Insurance and MOT Plan among required uploads for standard ROW permits.
  • ROW permit review and approval takes approximately twelve (12) to fifteen (15) business days (Right of Way Permitting Section). Plan ahead — that is not a same-week street drop.
  • After reviews are approved, the city places the record on “awaiting client reply” for a 48-hour work start notice. The ROW Permit Placard is issued after that notice is uploaded and dates are agreed. No work in the right of way until the placard is issued (Application Process PDF).
  • ROW Permitting contact (official page): rightofwaypermitting@tampagov.net, (813) 274-3104; 306 East Jackson Street, 4th Floor East Wing, Tampa, FL 33602.

Fees (Resolution 2022-638 ROW fee schedule, PDF still posted under document/2026 on tampa.gov; same Temporary Structure total on the Major Events Centralized Permitting Guide updated 01-02-2026)

  • Temporary Structure in ROW (Dumpster, Trailer, PODS, etc.): Base Permit Fee $50.00 + Permit Fee $100.00 = Total $150.00
  • Right of Way Management Section HTML fee table (Permit Fees page): Application Fee $50.00, plus Temporary Structure in ROW $100.00 per structure (same split as the resolution)
  • Permit Extension: Total $50.00 (resolution: Base $25.00 + Fee $25.00)
  • Lane Closure Fee (roadway not an arterial or collector): Total $50.00 (application/base only on the resolution row)
  • Lane Closure Fee (collectors and arterials): Base $50.00 + $150.00 per lane (varies)
  • Sidewalk closure for maintenance, replacement, or safety issues: Total $100.00 on the resolution schedule ($50 application + $50 fee); the Permit Fees HTML lists $50.00 per sidewalk as the activity line next to the separate $50 application fee

Fee authority cited on Resolution 2022-638: Sections 22-56 and 25-46 of the Code of Ordinances, City of Tampa. A Temporary Structure dumpster placement that also closes a sidewalk, bike path, or travel lane can pick up those separate fees — do not treat the $150 Temporary Structure total as covering lane or sidewalk closure.

The Temporary Structure fee is a flat permit total on the published schedule, not a per-day dumpster rate. There is no published 7-day city dumpster-in-ROW dollar amount separate from this Temporary Structure line.

Placement

  • This Temporary Structure ROW track is for dumpster / trailer / PODS (and other listed temporary items) placed in the City right-of-way (Temporary Structures page).
  • Site Plan must show every temporary structure/item in the ROW and the Fire Lane location.
  • MOT Plan is required with the application. The city publishes standard ROW Maintenance of Traffic Plans from the Right of Way Permitting resources list.
  • If the placement also needs a sidewalk or lane closure, that is a different fee line on the same ROW schedule.

Bin There Dump That Tampa — named hauler 7-day list

Fetched 9/1/2026. Rates & sizes page. No last-updated date printed on the article. Cite only as a named hauler, not a dated market index. Explicit 7-day rental on each row; overage $100/ton.

What not to put in

From Hillsborough County household-hazardous-waste, paint, and electronics pages. County guidance says do not throw household hazardous waste items away in curbside carts. City / county cart rules are not automatically hauler roll-off rules; this directory sticks to official HHW and electronics lists.

  • Paint products accepted as HHW / at Community Collection Centers: latex and oil-based paint, primer, stain, solvent (thinner, stripper), varnish (sealed, not leaking; limit 10 one-gallon or 5 five-gallon containers per month)
  • Household cleaners, adhesives, drain openers, aerosols, pest control, solvents
  • Automotive products: antifreeze / engine coolant, motor oil, waxes, cleaners, polishes, gasoline / diesel (max one 5-gallon container at HHW)
  • Pool and spa chemicals: chlorine, muriatic acid, clarifiers, cleaners
  • Lawn and garden chemicals: fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, insecticides, poisons
  • Lead-acid batteries (cars, motorcycles, golf carts, lawn mowers, boats) and power-tool / loose rechargeable lithium-ion, Ni-Cd, and NiMH batteries 12 inches or smaller; single-use lithium batteries (tape terminals or bag individually)
  • Mercury-containing devices: CFLs, fluorescent lamps, mercury thermometers and thermostats (limit 10 bulbs four feet and longer)
  • Propane and helium tanks and fire extinguishers (HHW limit: five 30-pound tanks or less)
  • Flares and ammunition (marine and road flares, ammunition) — HHW accepts those categories at collection events; explosives are not accepted (contact law enforcement)
  • Personal care products listed on the HHW page: nail polish remover, peroxide, rubbing alcohol
  • Cooking oil and LED bulbs (accepted at HHW collections — not for a ordinary trash dumpster)
  • Electronics (computers, TVs, phones, printers, stereo / VCR / DVD gear, and similar): take to Community Collection Centers — not to HHW Saturday events. Limit five intact household electronic items per household per month at CCCs (monitors, keyboards, routers, mice do not count toward that five). Do not strip housings; do not remove batteries from phones or tablets before drop-off
  • Commercial / business-generated hazardous waste (not accepted at HHW or CCC)
  • Biomedical waste / used needles / sharps (Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County, not HHW)
  • Medications (follow FDA disposal guidance; not accepted at HHW)
  • Radioactive materials (Florida DOH Bureau of Radiation Control)

Alkaline batteries (single-use AA, AAA, etc.): Hillsborough County says place in the garbage can, not the recycling bin. That is a cart rule, not a license to toss damaged lithium packs into a roll-off.

HHW collection (select Saturdays, 8 a.m.–2 p.m.; state-issued photo ID with a Hillsborough County residential address): first Saturday — Sheldon Road, 9805 Sheldon Road, Tampa; second Saturday — South County, 13000 U.S. Highway 41, Gibsonton; third Saturday — Hillsborough Heights, 6209 County Road 579, Seffner.

Community Collection Centers (paint and electronics during normal hours; CCC hours Monday–Saturday 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m. unless noted): Northwest County Solid Waste Facility, 8001 W. Linebaugh Avenue, Tampa; Hillsborough Heights; South County; Alderman’s Ford (Plant City); Wimauma. Sheldon Road is HHW-only on its Saturday, not a full CCC. Questions: (813) 272-5680 / SolidWaste@HCFL.gov.

Dumpsters.com Tampa (hauler FAQ) says empty or dried latex paint cans may be accepted if sealed and wrapped, and lists electronics among accepted roll-off materials with restrictions. Follow Hillsborough County HHW / CCC rules for paint and electronics, not the hauler marketing line.

Gotchas

  • YES for City of Tampa ROW: Temporary Structure permit for dumpster / trailer / PODS in the public right-of-way. Total $150 on Resolution 2022-638 ($50 base + $100 fee).
  • ROW review is about 12–15 business days. Upload COI, Site Plan with Fire Lane, and MOT Plan. No work until the ROW Permit Placard is issued after the 48-hour work start notice.
  • Lane closure or sidewalk closure is a different fee line than Temporary Structure.
  • The city never published a driveway-is-free rule on the Temporary Structures or ROW pages we fetched. Dumpsters.com Tampa FAQ claims driveway placement needs no permit — that is a hauler line, not a city ordinance quote on this page.
  • Permit Extension is $50 total on the resolution schedule if you need more time.
  • Electronics belong at Community Collection Centers, not in an ordinary trash dumpster and not at Saturday HHW events.
  • Dumpsters.com Tampa delivery envelope: about 60 ft of length and 23–25 ft of vertical clearance (trees and wires on older lots are a real constraint).
  • HOA rules and CC&Rs are not the city ROW permit. Check them separately.
  • Hometown September 2026 20-yard rows disagree on days and tons (3-day / 0-ton trailer rows vs 7-day / 1-ton roll-off rows). They are cited as separate rows, not averaged.
  • Right of Way Moratorium 2026 is linked from the city’s ROW Permitting resources — check that list before you pick dates near restricted corridors.

Tampa dumpster FAQs

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Tampa?
Yes for City of Tampa public right-of-way placement under the Temporary Structure (dumpster/trailer/PODS) program. Prefer private driveway when possible. Tampa does not publish a “driveway = no permit” rule on the sources used here.
Is a Tampa driveway dumpster free of the Temporary Structure permit?
Keeping the box entirely on private property generally avoids the public-ROW Temporary Structure path described here. Confirm property lines and HOA rules; do not assume a national driveway exemption.
What size dumpster do most Tampa homeowners need?
Most Tampa residential jobs land on a 10-yard for heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick, small roofing) or a 20-yard for kitchen/mixed cleanouts. A 30–40 yard needs serious driveway length and height clearance. Weight and included tons beat “bigger is better.” See the Size chooser on this page for Tampa-specific notes.
What does a typical dumpster rental cost in Tampa?
Dumpsters.com Tampa shows a blended $425–$1,216 (average $704, verified 8/29/2026). Other labeled sources on this page show additional bands (including lower cleanout-style figures). Confirm tons, days, and debris type for your job.
What should I not put in a dumpster in Tampa?
Keep household hazardous waste, wet paint/solvents, batteries, tires, Freon appliances, asbestos, medical waste, and similar banned items out of a mixed roll-off. Use the “What not to put in” section on this Tampa page for local HHW / landfill rules, and ask the hauler before you load gray-area items.
